Programs

  • ESL Program (General English)

MLI's most popular class, this program is geared toward students who want to communicate in English.
Students are placed into 8 different levels of classes to improve their English skills in writing, listening, speaking and reading.

The program includes 15.8 hours of Vacation ESL per week for students on ESTA visas and 18 hours of regular ESL per week (2 hours of elective classes on Fridays) for students holding student visas. As an option, students can add CMAR, a 4-hour-per-week pronunciation correction class, to the regular ESL program to enhance their pronunciation skills.

  • TOEFL® Preparation Program

This program is intended to prepare students for the TOEFL® iBT, which is used for admissions to nearly all colleges and universities in the United States, as well as by government agencies, private companies, certification agencies and scholarship organizations as proof of English language proficiency.

The program aims not only at test-taking strategies to achieve high scores, but also to improve the 4 skills of writing, listening, speaking and reading in English.

  • IELTS™ Preparation Program

This program is designed to prepare students for the IELTS™ (International English Language Testing System) examination, an English language proficiency test developed primarily in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Students learn skills and strategies to achieve high scores in each of the 4 skills.
IELTS™ is relatively easier than TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and is suitable for students who find TOEFL® too challenging. To qualify for this program, students are required to have an intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency.

  • Conversation Program

This program is focused on daily life and is designed to improve students' ability to speak fluently in English.
Consisting of Pronunciation, Idioms, and Discussion, CMAR (Pronunciation Correction) will hone the practical conversational skills of students with the goal of speaking English with confidence.
In the Idioms class (FOI), students will learn how phrases used in daily life are actually used in real life.

Discussions will help students develop the ability to converse in situations that are relevant to life in the United States. The Conversation Program is divided into Intermediate and Advanced levels.

The Intermediate level is aimed at developing students' ability to converse in English, while the Advanced level is designed for students to learn higher level conversational skills along with daily conversation skills.

  • Business Plus TOEIC Program

In the international business scene, English is the universal language of the world. The program is aimed at improving practical business communication skills in English as well as boosting TOEIC® test scores.
In the business class, students work both individually and in groups on comprehensively improving themselves with practical simulations using graphs, diagrams, PowerPoint presentations, business plans and how to work on projects to explain a company's profile. Students also learn how to prepare for interviews, including portfolio and resume preparation to effectively present themselves, interview etiquette in English and how to negotiate a competitive salary.

Through intensive practice, students will develop English language skills for business use.
The TOEIC Preparation Course covers the different sections of the TOEIC and aims to achieve the highest possible score in the shortest time possible. Practical tests are scheduled every 4 weeks to ensure that students improve their scores and learn the strategies that will lead them to the correct answers.

  • ESL + UCLA Certificate Program

This program allows students to take specialized courses with local American students at UCLA, located just a 5-minute walk from the Westwood campus.

Short-term courses of 9 months, medium-term courses of up to approximately 1.5 years and long-term courses of up to approximately 2.5 years are available to give students the experience of studying something in English.
