Established in 2003, Jetstar Airways was launched by Qantas as a low-cost subsidiary to compete with other low-cost airlines in Australia. Jetstar is headquartered in Melbourne and maintains its primary hub at Melbourne Airport, from which it operates flights all over Australia and abroad. Jetstar also operates flights out of five secondary hubs in Auckland Airport, Brisbane Airport, Sydney Airport, Gold Coast Airport, and Cairns Airport.
Jetstar has sister companies under the Jetstar Airways brand, namely Jetstar Asia, Jetstar Pacific Airlines and Jetstar Japan, all of which are partially owned by Qantas. Jetstar Airways has been a member of the Oneworld alliance since 2011.
Checked baggage is not included in basic fares for Jetstar - if you need to check in luggage make sure to add this option while booking, it's more expensive to add later. Jetstar allows passengers to add checked luggage from 15kg to 40kg to their tickets for an additional charge.

Jetstar has a weight limit of 7kg/15lbs for carry-on baggage. Each passenger is allowed one bag per person. Note that Jetstar are normally quite strict with their carry-on baggage policy, if your cabin baggage weighs over 7kg you may have to pay an additional fee.

Jetstar offers in-flight food and drinks to passengers, either for an extra fee or included in the ticket price, depending on your fare type. Passengers flying on Economy Starter can pre-book meals and in-flight entertainment for a fee on top of their original ticket price. In-flight food and entertainment is complimentary for those holding a ticket with Economy Starter Plus or Starter Max Bundles.
Jetstar offers Business Class on select routes for those wanting more comfortable seating and extra legroom. Extras such as amenity kits and blankets are also usually provided free of charge for those flying in Business Class with Jetstar along with meals and drinks served on the flight.
Jetstar offer their Club Jetstar service, allowing customers early access of discounted tickets and discounted rates of baggage and other services. To join Club Jetstar you'll need to pay an annual membership fee of 55 AUD.
Most Jetstar flights only accept debit and credit cards as payment for on-board purchases. Some flights however, also accept cash payments. For more information for your payment options, you can check with Jetstar’s customer service hotline prior to your flight. You may also opt to pre-pay for your meals and in-flight entertainment when you book your ticket.

While Jetstar itself does not have a frequent flyer or mileage program, passengers with Jetstar can sign up for membership of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program to earn points and miles for tickets used on select fare types. Qantas Frequent Flyer is free for most people apart from residents of Australia and New Zealand who must pay a sign-up fee to use the service.
Jetstar allows passengers to check-in online from 24 hours up to one hour before the flight for domestic flights and up to two hours before the flight time for international flights. Passengers can also pre-select seats, which requires an additional fee for Economy Starter fares.
Passengers checking in at the airport are advised to do so at least 3 hours prior to the flight with their ticket and valid travel documents on hand.
