Nepal Airlines is the national flag carrier of Nepal, headquartered in the capital city of Kathmandu. Established in 1958 as Royal Nepal Airlines, the airline launched international operations in 1960. Following the abolition of Nepal’s monarchy, the airline was renamed Nepal Airlines in 2006. It currently operates domestic flights as well as international routes to Thailand, Malaysia, Qatar, India, and Hong Kong.
With over 90% of Nepal’s terrain covered by mountains, air travel is essential for the transportation of people, goods, and tourists. Recognizing the importance of aviation for economic development, the country has prioritized strengthening its aviation sector. However, the airline faces significant challenges.
Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal Airlines’ hub, is known globally for its difficult operations due to its location surrounded by high mountains. Additionally, aging aircraft and facilities have led to frequent engine troubles, flight delays, cancellations, and accidents. Efforts to improve include stricter maintenance schedules and fleet modernization.
Currently, flights from Nepal are banned from entering EU airspace due to safety concerns. Nepal Airlines previously operated regular flights to Kansai International Airport in Japan, but these were discontinued in 2008 due to a lack of available aircraft.
