As its name suggests, Shanghai Airlines is a Shanghai-based airline established in 1985. It is one of China's older airlines not derived from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). In 2010, it was acquired by China Eastern Airlines, becoming a fully owned subsidiary.
As of 2017, Shanghai Airlines remains a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines. However, there is speculation that it may eventually be fully merged into its parent company. Steps such as unifying regulations and consolidating branches are gradually being implemented, possibly as preparation for a future merger.
