Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 under the name British Atlantic Airways operating its first flight from London Gatwick to Newark International Airport. Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in Crawley and flights operate out of its two main hubs located at London Heathrow and London Gatwick in the UK.
Economy Class passengers flying with Virgin Atlantic may bring one piece of checked baggage of up to 23kg/50lbs. Virgin Atlantic Premium and Upper Class passengers may bring two pieces of checked baggage of up to 23kg/50lbs per piece. Note that Economy Light tickets do not come with a checked baggage allowance and must be purchased as an extra.
Dimensions for checked baggage with Virgin Atlantic must be within 90 x 75 x 43cm.
All passengers flying in Economy or Premium class with Virgin Atlantic may bring one piece of carry-on baggage of up to 10kg/22lbs. Upper Class passengers with Virgin Atlantic are allowed two pieces of carry-on baggage with a combined weight of 16kg/35lbs, each piece must be below 12kg/26lbs.
Dimensions of carry-on baggage with Virgin Atlantic must be under 23 x 36 x 56cm.
Virgin Atlantic provides excellent on board service, including quality in-flight meals for passengers. There is also a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from.
Passengers with an Virgin Atlantic Upper Class ticket can enjoy additional luxury by traveling in a seat which converts to a full size flat bed. While Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class is comparable to Business Class in other airlines, Virgin offers various extras you might find normally in First Class to take their Business Class experience to the next level.
Aside from the standard Economy Class, Virgin Atlantic also offers a Premium cabin. Similar to Premium Economy class in other airlines, Virgin Atlantic's Premium cabin offers more legroom and seat space along with other extra amenities for an additional cost.
Virgin Atlantic provides special meals for those with dietary requirements or religious restrictions. A special meal request can be made at the time you book a ticket online. Special meals can also be requested after booking the air ticket through the Virgin Atlantic customer service hotline at least 48 hours before the flight.
Assistive devices such as walking canes or fully collapsible wheelchairs are permitted in the cabin. However, the cane must not be sharp. Carry-on wheelchairs, on the other hand, are permitted on select flights and subject to the availability of space in the cabin. If there is no space to stow the wheelchair, it has to be checked-in. The wheelchair will be prioritized to be unloaded upon arrival so that it can be used be used immediately.
Purchasing checked baggage for Economy Light tickets normally costs 45 GBP or 60 USD for the first piece of baggage.
Oversized baggage fees are only paid at the airport for Virgin Atlantic and will cost 200 GBP or 300 USD per piece.
Virgin Atlantic's mileage and frequent flyer program is called Flying Club, allowing passengers to earn points which can be used to buy tickets and purchase upgrades. Members start with Red tier and can use points to upgrade to Silver and Gold tiers with additional benefits.
Virgin Atlantic is not part of any airline alliance, however they are partnered with Delta, KLM and Air France.
Virgin Atlantic passengers can check-in online to avoid queues at the airport. Online check-in is available at least 24 hours and closes 70 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Passengers who have checked-in online can proceed to drop their bags at the designated bag drop counters at the airport.
Passengers can also check-in personally at Virgin Atlantic check-in counters by presenting their air ticket along with valid travel documents. Passengers who opt to check-in at the airport have to arrive at least 3 hours prior to departure to complete all formalities.
