1. Sawada Beach

Sawada Beach offers a unique landscape filled with large rocks. These massive rocks scattered across the shallow coral reef were said to have been washed ashore during the massive tsunami caused by the 1771 Yaeyama earthquake. Located north of Irabu Island and Shimoji Island, Sawada Beach is a picturesque spot that has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Beaches. From this peaceful beach, you can also catch a glimpse of the nearby Shimojishima Airport.

2. Shimojishima Airport RW17 End

Shimojishima Airport takes up most of the western half of Shimojishima Island. At the northern tip, 17 End is a scenic spot with the landmark of airplane approach lights.

Previously, you could drive around the coastline around the airport, but due to a number of accidents, it is now prohibited to drive. However, you can walk there. 4. Ikema Ohashi Bridge spanning the emerald green sea

The Ikema Bridge, which connects Ikema Island, which is located to the north of Miyako Island, is surrounded by an ocean of verdant green. Once you

cross the bridge, there is a shopping area on your right, so please stop by. After shopping, you can go up to the second floor or rooftop of a store to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Ikema Bridge, Nishihennazaki, and more.

You can also go down to the coast, so be sure to go right up to the water's edge.

As you cross the straight Ikema Ohashi Bridge, you can gaze out at the beautiful ocean. This is a scenic spot that will make you feel like you want to keep driving forever.

5. Yabiji: the spectacular view of Japan's largest table-shaped coral reef

North of Ikema Island, about 5 to 20 km offshore, there is a stunning spot where coral reefs gather. Named Yabiji, this area consists of more than 100 large and small coral reefs (known as "bishi").

To visit Yabiji, it’s recommended to join a tour. From the cruiser, the expansive marine blue sea offers a breathtaking view that is beyond words.

Yabiji is also famous as a snorkeling spot, where the clear waters reveal vibrant tropical fish swimming among the coral reefs. After crossing the Irabu Bridge and turning right, you will find the Irabu Bridge Commemorative Monument and the "Yamatobu Large Rock," a single rock towering about 25 meters high. There is also a scenic viewpoint where you can see the entire cape. Drive back from the parking lot to the base of the cape, then take a narrow road to reach the observation deck. From there, you can see the full view of the long, thin cape, a landscape often seen in images of Miyako Island. It’s a place worth visiting, especially on a sunny day, though the narrow road might be challenging for some drivers.

10. Sunayama Beach - A Stunning View of the Deep Blue Sea from the Sand Dunes

Sunayama Beach is another highly recognized scenic spot in Miyako Island. To reach the beach, you’ll need to climb over a gentle sand hill from the parking lot. Once you reach the top, the view opens up to reveal a beautiful cobalt blue sea in front of you! As you descend the slope, a small white beach awaits, with a large rock arch to the left.

This rock arch, formed from raised coral reefs, is the symbol of Sunayama Beach. Whether you look at the view through the arch, the sea beyond it, or the arch itself, every angle offers a picturesque view.
