It is said that about 10% of Marumori Town's area is covered by national forests. Gazing upon the serene, nature-filled landscapes, you can break free from your busy daily life and enjoy a moment of true relaxation. Please explore the tourist spots introduced below and use them as a reference when planning your visit.

1. Abukuma Line Boat Ride

On a boat ride along the Abukuma River, you can enjoy the gorge eroded by the river and the ever-changing scenery along both banks throughout the seasons. The Abukuma River, known as the second largest river in the Tohoku region, was once a major transportation route for goods until the early Showa era. This boat ride preserves the history of the river transport that once played a crucial role in moving materials and supporting many people.

One of the attractions of the Abukuma Line boat ride is that the experience varies by season. In spring, a gentle and warm landscape unfolds with flowers blooming along the riverbanks. In summer, you can enjoy a cooling boat ride as the pleasant breeze sweeps across the river. In autumn, you can relish a meal featuring simmers of sweet potatoes surrounded by autumn foliage. In winter, warm up with a hot pot while snuggled up as if under a kotatsu.

2. Tachi-ya Sunflower Field

Marumori is also home to the “Tachi-ya Sunflower Field,” a spot where you can enjoy the town’s beautiful scenery. From mid to late September, sunflowers bloom in abundance, spreading a gorgeous yellow landscape over a section of rice fields.

On clear days, you can gaze upon the Zao Mountain Range. The beauty of this view has been designated as one of the “36 Views of Zao in Miyagi.” In September, the “Tachi-ya Sunflower Festival” is held, where you can pick sunflowers at a rate of 100 yen per session! Bringing home many sunflowers will surely brighten up your home.

3. Dodoshi Park

Dodoshi Park is a nature-rich park located just south of Marumori Bridge. It offers an expansive space where you can enjoy views not only of the town center and the Tachi-ya area but also the distant Zao Mountain Range.

In April, cherry blossoms bloom; in May, azaleas; in June, hydrangeas; in July, mountain lilies; and in August, mountain hibiscus bloom, creating a magical landscape. More than 20 varieties of trees burst into flower, and over 40 types of trees flourish, refreshing you from the daily grind.

4. Kura Folk Museum Sairiyashiki (Marumori History Museum “Marumori Furusato-kan”)

Mr. Saito Risuke, who prospered thanks to riverboat transport along the Abukuma River, was renowned in Marumori for seven generations. His residence is now open to the public as the “Kura Folk Museum Sairiyashiki” (Marumori History Museum “Marumori Furusato-kan”). Here, you can view historical exhibits that convey the history of that era, including period clothing and artworks. The museum consists of six publicly accessible storehouses out of seven, along with two residences.

In 2010, 12 of the buildings were registered as nationally designated tangible cultural properties, further elevating the site’s reputation as a tourist destination. Various events are held throughout the year, which is a delightful bonus for visitors to Marumori. Regularly scheduled events such as “Sairi Zattomukashi” and “Silk Washi/Papermaking Experience” are held within the mansion, so it is advisable to check the schedule in advance before planning your visit.

5. Aizome Workshop “Yafu”

At Aizome Workshop “Yafu,” traditional Japanese indigo dyeing is practiced without the use of chemicals or synthetic indigo, following time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Inside the workshop, there is also a gallery where you can enjoy exhibits and purchase artworks, making it a delightful place to appreciate and experience indigo dyeing.
