B! LINE

Many people are fascinated by cats, creatures that live freely and independently. It's hard not to chase after them when you happen to pass by one.

For cat lovers, there's a paradise-like island located in Shingu-machi, Kasuga-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture. It's called "Ainoshima."

In 2013, CNN, a famous American media outlet, selected Ainoshima as one of the "World's Top 6 Cat Spots," making it a globally recognized island blessed with cats. In this article, we'll delve deep into the charm of Ainoshima, known as the "Cat Island."

What is Ainoshima?

"Ainoshima" is an island in Shingu-machi, Kasuga-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture, floating on the Genkai Sea. It is located about 8km northwest of Shingu Coast. Interestingly, it is an island with a history that even appears in the Manyoshu and Zoku Kokin Wakashu collections of Japanese poetry.

Not only is it popular with cat enthusiasts, but it is also a popular spot for fishing. There is an elementary and junior high school on the island, and about 270 residents live there.

Access to Ainoshima!

You can reach Ainoshima in just 17 minutes by the Shingu-cho municipal ferry "Shingu." Shingu-cho community buses operate between Nishitetsu Shingu Station, JR Fukuoka University Mae Station, Shingu Chuo Station, and the fishing port, timed to coincide with the ferry schedule.

Please note that the number of ferry trips varies between summer and winter, and there are no buses or taxis on the island.

The Cats of Ainoshima

Between Funaba and the fishing port, there's a hidden gem where you can encounter numerous cats! These friendly felines will often come up to you for pets. It's a paradise for cat lovers.

Whether you enjoy watching cats sunbathe or playing with the more sociable ones, you can leisurely spend time with the cats.

Things to avoid doing to the cats of Ainoshima

The absolute no-no is feeding the cats. This can disrupt the cats' ecosystem.

Additionally, please refrain from moving the cats. About 200 cats live on the island, and they have their own territories. Moving a cat could make it difficult for them to survive outside of their familiar area. So, please cherish the cats in their own environment.

After playing with the cats on Ainoshima, why not indulge in some delicious local cuisine? The island has gained quite a reputation for its food, attracting many visitors specifically for its gourmet offerings.
