Located in central Oita Prefecture, Yufu City is a town famed for its Yufuin Onsen. In addition to Yufuin Onsen, the town’s laid-back, bucolic streets—also home to Yufuin and Yuhira Onsen—are a big draw. Many people visit Yufu City to escape the daily grind and rejuvenate. Festivals in Yufu City are a must‐see point, so here are some of its festivals!
1. Yufuin Bonchi Festival
Held over two days during the height of summer on August 15th and 16th, the Yufuin Bonchi Festival is one of the signature festivals of Yufu City. Taking place in Yufuin Town—a popular hot spring destination—this festival draws huge crowds and is a tremendous celebration. On the first day, the “Kōjō-sai” is held. This event recreates a traditional insect-chasing ritual praying for a bountiful harvest. The parade that marches through the town is a must-see! At night, a fireworks display lights up Yufuin Town.
On the second day, the “Mantōrō Hi-Matsuri” (Lantern Float Fire Festival) takes place along Yufumi Street, Yufuin Town’s main thoroughfare. Traditional dancers perform Bon Odori to comfort the spirits of the departed. With nearly 1,000 people filling the street and dancing, the lively scene is truly breathtaking. This festival is a fantastic way to enjoy a vibrant summer celebration together!

3. Onoya Shichiya Kannon Festival
Held every year in Shonai Town, the Onoya Shichiya Kannon Festival is said to have originated from an incident in which a giant turtle living by the riverbank was mistakenly stepped on, causing a water-related calamity. The festival was established to console the spirits of those affected by the disaster. The festival is packed with various events including a “Seirei Nagashi” (spirit floating ceremony), traditional Kagura performances unique to Yufu City, and a fireworks display.
One of the highlights is the sight of a large turtle-shaped lantern—measuring about 8 meters in length—being hoisted by a crane. The flickering light of the lantern creates a truly magical scene. With numerous food stalls creating a lively atmosphere throughout the festival period, spending an evening under the fireworks in Yufu City is an unforgettable experience.
