The "Shimane Prefectural Lake Shinji Nature Museum Gobius" is an aquarium loved by the people of Izumo. Centered around the unique Lake Shinji, which contains a small amount of salt, the museum exhibits a wide variety of creatures. This facility, where visitors can also interact with the lake's wildlife, is a fun spot for all ages. In this article, we’ll explore the charm of the Shimane Prefectural Lake Shinji Nature Museum Gobius and share helpful information for your visit.

What is the Lake Shinji Nature Museum Gobius?

The Shimane Prefectural Lake Shinji Nature Museum Gobius is an interactive learning facility that exhibits creatures mainly from the rivers of Shimane Prefecture and Lake Shinji. The word "Gobius" in the facility’s name comes from Latin, meaning "small fish." It is also the scientific name of a goby species, and the museum’s mascot "Gobi-kun" is modeled after the "Maha-ze" (a type of goby).
The museum’s main theme, Lake Shinji, is the seventh largest lake in Japan. Due to its unique "brackish water" — a mixture of fresh and saltwater — the lake is home to many fish and the famous local specialty, the freshwater clam (shijimi).
There are about 200 species and 10,000 creatures exhibited. Although it is an aquarium, it also features insects and birds that live near the water. One of the main attractions is the opportunity to learn about many different creatures.

Highlights of the Permanent Exhibits

Inside the museum, creatures are displayed based on their habitat. Right at the entrance, a large circular tank welcomes you with schools of fish that change depending on the season. Along the corridor, round windows let you observe fish and turtles swimming gracefully.
There is also a diorama tank displaying brackish water creatures, showing how different species live in different salinity levels. A unique "Helmet Tank" allows you to view the creatures as if you were underwater — a rare and immersive experience.
The freshwater section features endangered species and the Japanese Giant Salamander, a designated natural monument. Additionally, there are tanks displaying giant fish from the ocean and interactive areas where you can touch some of the creatures — offering valuable hands-on experiences.
Moreover, Gobius is known for breeding and raising Icefish (Shirauo) through artificial insemination. Currently, the third generation is on display, marking the first such attempt in Japan. It’s highly recommended to check it out during your visit.

Outdoor Facilities

Outside, there is a biotope area called the "Obento Plaza". As the name suggests, you can sit and enjoy your lunch here on a nice sunny day. Within the grounds, there are ponds, streams, and trees, where you can spot aquatic creatures and birds. It's a relaxing space where you can feel close to nature.
Additionally, the Lake Shinji Nature Museum Gobius offers an interactive program where children can experience catching creatures themselves. The two-hour program includes a preliminary study session, catching the creatures, and a research presentation. It’s a great opportunity for children to learn about nature while having fun. Reservations are required. The fee, including the admission ticket, is 1,500 yen (as of November 16, 2019).
Since there is a limit to the number of participants, children should wear comfortable clothes, bring a change of clothes, and prepare drinks for hydration.
