Things to Do in Tokyo’s Hipster Neighborhood of Shimokitazawa

B! LINE

Often referred to as Tokyo's hipster district, Shimokitazawa is full of trendy shops and cafes, seemingly a world away from the flashing lights and neon signs of nearby Shibuya and Shinjuku. Here are some of the top things to do in Tokyo's little version of Greenwich Village.

Browse Through Thrift Shops

As you might expect from Tokyo's hipster center, there are plenty of second-hand stores lying around the area. You could easily spend a whole day just exploring the different shops you'll find around here. Some of the best thrift stores in Shimokitazawa are Flamingo and Stick Out. Head to these first and then work your way around the rest of them.

Book and Beer

For the ultimate hipster experience, head down to Shimokata for some B&B, book and beer, sipping on a selection of craft beers while reading through an extensive collection of books. While it's mainly aimed at locals, there is a selection of English books to read through as well if you don't fancy practicing your Japanese. Don't worry about trying to read amidst rowdy patrons, this book bar emphasizes the need for silence.

Get your Coffee Fix

You'll be spoiled for choice in decent coffee while exploring Shimokitazawa. The area is full of small, trendy third-wave coffee shops that create some of the best brews in the city and most nearby residents come to the area for this reason alone. Head to Frankie for some expertly crafted Melbourne style coffee or On The Way for delicious cupcakes to go with your cup of joe.

Boutique Shops

Apart from just thrift stores and coffee shops, Shimokitazawa is also full of shops selling handicrafts and other small items that make for great souvenirs and gifts to bring back for people. Also check out Village Vanguard, a bookshop that's full of all kinds of other gift ideas too.

Listen to Live Music

Shimokitazawa is a great area for bands to get recognition and start out, with a large number of live music venues, mostly at bars that often invite local bands to play there. Walk around the area at late evening and you'll have no trouble finding a bar that's playing music. You'll also find a number of shops selling vintage records and music memorabilia.
