However, Annaka City has many other tourist attractions besides the "Megane Bridge." This time, we will also introduce some of Annaka’s hidden gems!
One of Annaka City’s characteristics is its many historical relics that supported Japan’s history. A notable example is the residence of Joseph Hardy Neesima, who contributed to Japan’s modernization. This shows that Annaka was an important place historically.

1. Former Residence of Joseph Hardy Neesima

This is the former residence of Joseph Hardy Neesima (Niijima Jō), who devoted his life to founding Doshisha University. Since Niijima Jō was originally born in the Annaka Domain, he is a well-known historical figure with deep ties to Annaka City.
How much do you know about Niijima Jō? Many may know his name as the husband of the main character Yae from the 2013 NHK Taiga drama "Yae no Sakura." He is also famous as the founding father of Doshisha University.
Although he has recently gained more attention, many people may still not fully know what kind of person he was. This is a great opportunity to learn about the connection between Annaka City and Niijima Jō. Materials related to him are on display at this tourist spot, so be sure to check them out.

2. Annaka Church

This is the first church ever built in Gunma Prefecture and the first church in Japan designed and constructed by Japanese people.
This church holds great historical significance and is also closely related to Joseph Hardy Neesima. It’s an essential spot to visit if you want to learn about him.
As a Christian, Niijima Jō was passionate about studying Christianity. Despite Japan's ban on overseas travel at the time, he ventured abroad alone. His passion greatly contributed to the founding of this church. We hope visitors will remember this history while touring the site.
It’s a wonderful sightseeing spot, but advance reservation is required for a visit. Please make a reservation by phone at least three weeks before your preferred visit date.

3. Ryushoji Temple

At Ryushoji Temple, you’ll find many bells hanging along the temple grounds and the approach. These are called Bonnō Bells, and there are 108 of them, representing the number of worldly desires in Buddhism.
Ryushoji Temple also offers some truly unique sights you won’t find elsewhere. For instance, there is a statue of Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy) riding a bicycle—a very rare and special depiction worth seeing at least once.
Additionally, there is a mini-car museum showcasing miniature cars from around the world. The collection was gathered to pray for traffic safety, so feel free to take a look.
Interestingly, this temple also has ties to Joseph Hardy Neesima (Niijima Jō). It is said to be one of the places where he preached Christian teachings. Other Neesima-related sites in Annaka City include Myokoin Temple and the remains of Aritaya and Benransha. 4. Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park

At Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park, you can explore the history of the old Usui Line, which once ran powerfully through the Usui Pass. As a major route for transporting goods, this pass saw Japan's first introduction of the Abt system and mainline electrification—an important part of Japanese railway history that draws many railway enthusiasts.
Aside from exhibits and historical displays, you can enjoy mini steam locomotive rides and even try driving a train! It’s a fun destination not just for railway fans but for everyone.

5. Megane Bridge (Usui Third Bridge)

One of the most popular tourist spots in Annaka City is the "Megane Bridge", officially named the Usui Third Bridge.
This beautiful arched bridge made of red bricks once served as part of the Abt system railway line. After the line was discontinued due to the opening of a new route, the bridge was repurposed, and now visitors can walk across it.

Along the trail, you will also find the Old Maruyama Substation, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Be sure to check it out as well—this is truly a historic walking path.
You’ll pass through tunnels and cross bridges, making it a route that sparks a sense of adventure. It’s perfect for a pleasant walk on a sunny day!

7. Usui Pass Forest Park Exchange Hall "Touge-no-Yu"

If you’re looking to enjoy natural hot springs in Usui Pass, this is the perfect spot. It’s directly accessible on foot from Apt Road, making it a great place to relax your body after a walk.
The brick exterior gives it a charming look, while the interior is bright and chic. There are large baths designed in both Japanese and Western styles, plus private family baths for everyone to enjoy. All baths use natural hot spring water, perfect for soothing your fatigue—so take your time and relax.
There’s also a relaxation room, karaoke, private resting rooms, and of course, dining options. If you get a little hungry, try some of the local dishes made with ingredients from the area.

8. Usui Checkpoint Ruins

These are the ruins of the Usui Checkpoint, one of the checkpoints along the Nakasendo, a major route connecting Edo (Tokyo) to other regions during the Edo period. Annaka City is home to many well-preserved historical sites related to the Nakasendo.
In Gunma Prefecture, there is a traditional card game called "Jomo Karuta", designed to teach children about local history. The Usui Checkpoint Ruins are, of course, featured in this game.
Standing here and imagining the people and goods that once passed through during the Edo period is a moving experience. It’s a must-visit spot in Annaka City to feel the history of transportation and travel from that era.

9. Goryo Chaya Honjin

During the Edo period, teahouses lined the area near the checkpoints along the five main highways, where many travelers passed through. With walking as the main mode of transportation, these teahouses were an essential and welcoming stop for people traveling from one checkpoint to another.
"Goryo Chaya Honjin" was one of those teahouses, specifically used by high-ranking individuals such as feudal lords and nobles. Today, the building has been restored, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of what it looked like back then.
The entrance fee is 210 yen for adults and 100 yen for children. There are group discounts for parties of 20 or more, so please check ahead. It's definitely worth the visit for its historical value.

10. Daimyo Koji (Former Annaka Domain County Magistrate Residence)

What you’ll truly appreciate here is the elegant architecture and scenery. The traditional Japanese house design—with tatami floors and shoji paper sliding doors—gives a calming atmosphere. The garden view is simple yet serene, making you want to just sit on the veranda and soak in the peaceful surroundings.
Annaka City residents can enter for free. Non-residents pay an entrance fee of 210 yen for adults.
