Experience the Mysteries of Nature at the Geospot “Dogashima”!

Cruising is the Best Way to Explore the “Tensodo Cave”

Designated as a national natural monument in 1935, the “Tensodo Cave” is a sea cave formed by the erosion of seawater. Sunlight streaming through the skylight creates a mystical atmosphere, illuminating the dark cave interior in shades of blue and green—earning it the nickname “Japan’s Blue Grotto.”

While Tensodo Cave can be visited on foot, why not take the opportunity to enjoy it via a sightseeing cruise operated by Dogashima Marine? Dogashima Marine offers one sightseeing boat course and three cruise options.

◆ Cave Tour (Sightseeing Boat)

Tensodo Cave has three entrances: east, west, and south. The “Cave Tour” enters through the widest southern entrance and passes under the skylight. Sightseeing boats operate every 10–15 minutes, making it easy to hop on at your convenience.

Fare (per person): Adults ¥1,300 / Adult groups ¥1,170; Children ¥650 / Child groups ¥580
Operating hours: 8:15 AM – 4:30 PM
Duration: 20 minutes

◆ Dogashima Cruise

Take a high-speed cruiser to explore the coastal scenery on the “Dogashima Cruise.” This short 25-minute course covers the main sights of Dogashima, and on clear days, you might even catch a view of Mt. Fuji. Cruises operate once each in the morning and afternoon. Be aware that schedules may vary by season or day of the week.

Fare (per person): Adults ¥1,800 / Adult groups ¥1,620; Children ¥900 / Child groups ¥810
Schedule: http://izudougasima-yuransen.com/route/dougashima/
Duration: About 25 minutes

◆ Senganmon Cruise

For those who want to fully enjoy the natural beauty of Dogashima, the “Senganmon Cruise” is recommended. This leisurely 50-minute boat journey includes plenty of time to photograph Tensodo Cave, making it perfect for capturing scenic shots to post on social media.

Fare (per person): Adults ¥2,400 / Adult groups ¥2,160; Children ¥1,200 / Child groups ¥1,080
Schedule: http://izudougasima-yuransen.com/route/senganmon/
Duration: About 50 minutes

◆ Geosite Cruise

The Izu Peninsula was once an underwater volcano. Through volcanic activity, rock and ash accumulated and rose above sea level, forming Dogashima. On the “Geosite Cruise,” you can explore these geological wonders with a geoguide, including areas that are difficult to see from land.

Fare (per person): Adults ¥2,000 / Adult groups ¥1,820; Children ¥1,200 / Child groups ¥1,200
Operating time: Every Saturday at 12:00 PM
Duration: About 50 minutes

Izu’s Own Mont Saint-Michel?! “Sanshirō Island”

"Sanshirō Island," made up of four islands—Zōjima (Denbē Island), Nakanoshima, Okinosejima, and Takashima—got its name because depending on the angle, it appears to be either three or four islands. During low tide, a sandy path appears due to the tombolo phenomenon, allowing visitors to walk across to the nearest island, Zōjima.

This tombolo phenomenon occurs roughly 2–3 hours before and after low tide. However, depending on the weather, it may not be possible to cross even during low tide, so caution is advised. You can check the tide schedule on the official website of Nishiizu Town.

Crystal-Clear Waters at “Futō Coast”

Located on the way toward Tago, Futō Coast is one of the clearest beaches in all of Nishiizu. The area near the cave on the right side of the bay is especially popular as a snorkeling spot, where you can see tropical fish such as damselfish and sergeant majors.

From late July to late August, lifeguard stations and beach huts are set up, making it a great spot for snorkeling with children. The area is well-equipped with restrooms, free showers, dining options, inns, and even a reasonably priced public hot spring called “Shiosai-no-Yu.”

Stroll Along the Scenic “Tōmyōgasaki Promenade”

The Tōmyōgasaki Promenade is a 3.2 km hiking trail connecting Futō Coast and Tago Port. The path offers panoramic views of the beautiful coastline, along with seasonal flowers blooming along the shore and sunsets over Suruga Bay. The trail is dotted with great spots for snorkeling, exploring tide pools, and fishing.

Watch the Most Beautiful Sunset in Japan

The sunset at Dogashima Coast, selected as one of the “100 Best Sunsets in Japan,” is breathtaking. It is a highly popular photo spot, frequently featured on social media. Even on weekdays, many tourists gather along the coastline to witness the evening glow.

The vivid orange hues on a clear day are stunning, but sunsets on cloudy days are equally captivating. The mystical scene of the fading sun lingering in the darkening sky is awe-inspiring and sure to take your breath away.

Refresh Yourself in an Onsen on the Way Back

A visit to the Izu Peninsula wouldn’t be complete without experiencing an onsen. For day-trippers, reasonably priced public town-run hot springs are a great choice. For those with a more relaxed schedule, consider staying at Umibe no Kakureyu Seiryuu, where you can soak in an open-air bath while watching the sunset, or at Dogashima Onsen Hotel, known as the original spring source of Dogashima Onsen. Both also offer day-use bathing plans.

Summary

Dogashima offers a wide range of attractions including Tensodo Cave, often called “Japan’s Blue Grotto,” beaches, promenades, hot springs, and geosites. Since it's also close to Toi Gold Mine and Toi Onsen, consider extending your trip for more sightseeing. Enjoy a relaxing tour of Western Izu while staying at a hot spring inn.
