Guide to Hirome Market – A Gourmet Spot to Enjoy Kochi’s Cuisine and Sake

Located in Kochi City, Hirome Market is a popular gourmet spot where you can enjoy delicious food and sake. This large food court-style facility resembles a bustling food stall village, with around 40 restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines including Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes. The name “Hirome Market” originates from its historical roots—it was once the site of the Hirome-yashiki (Hirome residence), which remained familiar to many even after the residence was gone following the Meiji Restoration.
Here, you can order your favorite dishes and sit wherever you like while fully enjoying Kochi's local specialties. The lively atmosphere makes it easy and enjoyable even if you're visiting alone.

Guide to Hirome Market – A Gourmet Spot to Enjoy Kochi’s Cuisine and Sake

Easy-to-Find Seating at “Oshiroshita Hiroba”

Hirome Market is divided into seven blocks, and among them, Oshiroshita Hiroba is especially recommended for those who want to sit and eat leisurely, as it has a spacious layout with many table seats.
In particular, Morimitsu Suisan’s Tai-meshi (sea bream rice)—named with the hopes of "spreading this delicious taste" using a play on words involving "tai" (sea bream)—is exceptional. The restaurant also offers a wide selection of menu items such as set meals, sashimi, and ochazuke (rice with tea), making it hard to choose just one. They even have daily specials, so be sure to try them. The restaurant is located just at the corner of Oshiroshita Hiroba.
At Chinmido, you can indulge in plenty of Kochi souvenirs and local specialties. Here you’ll find Katsuo no Tataki (seared bonito), fried moray eel, sunfish, and river shrimp. The fried sunfish is a Sunday-only menu item, so if you're curious, be sure to visit on a Sunday.

Shopping Fun on Ryoma Street

On Ryoma Street, there’s Tosa Gyosai Ichiba, a delicious kamaboko (fish cake) shop that also offers takeout.
Have you ever tasted truly delicious kamaboko or chikuwa? The fresher it is, the more you can really taste the fish. Made the traditional way with all-natural ingredients, Tosa/Kochi's hand-made kamaboko is something you should definitely try. The shop is located right at the corner just as you enter Hirome Market.
Also, it would be a waste to just eat and leave! Yoshioka Butcher Shop offers delicious meat and side dishes for takeout. This shop specializes in Tosa Wagyu beef, and their top recommendation is Kenro-san's Hirome Croquette, made with careful attention to flavor. You can also enjoy items like karaage (fried chicken) and draft beer. It's the perfect place to unwind from your travels.

From Friendly Izakayas to Counter Bars! “Jiyu Hiroba”

At the center of Jiyu Hiroba, the counter bar Famille is known for its extremely creamy and exquisite draft beer, which stands out with a special taste different from the rest. It's a space where anyone—regardless of age—can strike up a friendly conversation. Even if you don’t drink alcohol, soft drinks are available, so be sure to stop by when visiting Hirome Market.
Also unique to Hirome Market is Darts Spot Bull, where you can enjoy drinks while playing darts. In addition to cocktails, you can try local Tosa sake here. With morning menu options as well, it’s a popular spot even for early visitors.

Trendy Tosa Gourmet at “Hirome Bar”

At the stylish bar & café Le Marché in Hirome Bar, you can enjoy high-end wine imported directly from France served through a special dispenser. Pair it with trendy bites like vegetable quiche or gateau chocolat for a delightful experience. The bright, open interior and fashionable exterior make it an inviting place to step into.
Also recommended is Pizza Bar Tosa no Kama, where you can casually enjoy wine and pizza. If you’re in the mood for Western food, this is a great stop.

Outdoor Terrace Charm at “Gicchiri Sunday Market”

Perfect for sunny days, the terrace bar Sanctuary offers cocktails and highballs in an open-air setting. It provides a relaxed atmosphere, quite different from the lively Hirome Market.
Be sure to also visit Omiyage-ya, where you can purchase a variety of Kochi specialty souvenirs like yuzu salt and ponzu unique to the region. For those wanting a keepsake from their trip to Kochi, enjoy browsing this nostalgic, old-style shop.

Tosa’s Food Stall Village Open from the Morning

For those wanting to enjoy breakfast early at Hirome Market, we recommend Ryoma Chaya, which opens at 9:00 AM. Everything in the store is handmade, and their rice balls are very affordable and especially popular with foreign tourists.
Also recommended is Darts Spot Bull, which opens at 8:00 AM only on Sundays (and at 9:00 AM on other days). Check the opening time before heading out. If you want to enjoy a peaceful morning experience, head there early. For those who prefer a lively vibe, midday is the best time to go.
