Every year around Golden Week, the coastline of Kamisu City in Ibaraki Prefecture becomes a popular spot for shell gathering. In the summer, it bustles as a tourist and swimming destination and has even been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Beaches.” The shallow waters and white sand beaches provide a safe and enjoyable seaside experience, even just for sightseeing.
Hasaki Beach also boasts numerous surf spots, drawing visitors year-round. Every July, the Kamisu Mayor's Cup Hasaki Tournament is held here, featuring surfing and bodyboarding competitions. It’s a gateway event for aspiring professional surfers, attracting athletes from all over Japan. With surfing having been added as an Olympic sport in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this event is expected to gain even more momentum.
Next to Hasaki Beach is a facility called “San San Park,” equipped with restrooms and paid hot showers, making it a family-friendly destination even for those with small children.
In August, Kamisu City’s grand event, the Kirasse Festival, takes place here, drawing about 30,000 visitors. The main attractions are a giant mikoshi (portable shrine) and a fireworks display featuring 7,000 fireworks. There are many activities available throughout the day, making it a must-visit event.

2. Minato Park

Minato Park is surrounded by 8,000 tropical trees and remains green all year round. Its iconic observation tower stands at 52 meters high, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. From the top, you can see the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone, Kashima Port, and even ships navigating the Pacific Ocean.
On clear days, Mt. Fuji is also visible! The night view is stunning, with the lights of the factories adding a romantic touch. It’s a great spot to relax and unwind away from the noise of the city.

Kamisu City has several auto campgrounds, but Nikkawahama Auto Campground is especially praised for how easily one can enjoy camping. It features 50 grassy lots and is adjacent to Nikkawahama Beach, allowing you to enjoy both camping and seaside leisure—a true two-in-one recreational spot.
It has well-equipped facilities including cooking areas and showers. There’s also a nearby hot spring where you can relax and refresh. All barbecue equipment is available for rent, so you only need to bring food. Tents and sleeping bags are also available to rent, making it perfect for first-time campers.

4. Natural Hot Spring Yu-Port Hasaki
