A captivating Caribbean vacation on “St. Croix”, Carefully selected sightseeing spots

B! LINE

How about taking an extraordinary Caribbean vacation to St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Just hearing “Caribbean” is enough to spark excitement! St. Croix’s stunning beaches, which never fail to captivate travelers from all over the world, offer year-round tropical weather and welcome countless visitors.

But the charm of St. Croix, home to an international airport, is not limited to its beaches. The island also boasts historical sites, museums, nature parks, plantations, and beautiful architecture.

This time, from among the many attractions, we’ll introduce five carefully selected “must-see” spots all at once.

1. Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (westernmost point of the island)

When it comes to sightseeing in St. Croix, beautiful beaches come to mind. Among them, the beach at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge stands out.

This beach lies at the very western tip of the island. Access is restricted by season, day, and time, so it is not a spot you can visit anytime. That’s exactly why you should plan your trip to coincide with its open periods!

From April to August each year, the refuge completely closes for turtle nesting season. Otherwise, it is open only on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so make sure to confirm with your travel agency in advance.

Powdery white sand, crystal-clear blue skies, and sea! For movie lovers, this is a must-visit. The breathtaking final beach scene of the Hollywood film The Shawshank Redemption (1994) was filmed right here at Sandy Point.

2. Point Udall (easternmost point of the island)

Point Udall, located at the eastern tip of St. Croix (and thus the easternmost point of the United States!), is another must-see. Driving along the island’s eastern coast while enjoying the scenery is highly recommended.

The dry climate around Point Udall means you’ll see clusters of cacti and desert-like plants. The contrast against the turquoise Caribbean Sea is stunning! It’s a panoramic viewpoint you shouldn’t miss.

To the south towers Goat Hill along the road, and to the north, you can see Buck Island, home to the famous Buck Island Reef National Monument.

3. Fort Christiansvaern

Christiansted is one of St. Croix’s two main towns, located on the eastern side. Though compact, it is filled with attractions. Among them, Fort Christiansvaern is a must-see when visiting St. Croix.

Fort Christiansvaern is the best-preserved of the five Danish-era forts remaining in the Virgin Islands and is designated a National Historic Site. Inside the fort grounds, you’ll also find a visitor center where tourists can gather information.

This fort is considered the finest example of beautiful colonial Danish architecture. Be sure to etch it into your memory as part of your St. Croix experience!

4. Oscar E. Henry Customs House

The other main town of St. Croix is Frederiksted, a picturesque waterfront city on the island’s west side. Hidden among its charms is the lesser-known but worthwhile Oscar E. Henry Customs House.

This Danish customs house, built in the 18th century, stands by Frederiksted’s waterfront.

Each year on U.S. Independence Day and a few other times, Crucian Carnival (known as the “Funa Carnival”) is held in front of the Oscar E. Henry Customs House. The island’s best dishes and baked goods are sold here, attracting both locals and visitors.

It’s a chance to enjoy a different side of St. Croix.

5. St. George Village Botanical Garden

St. George Village Botanical Garden is another must-visit attraction when staying on St. Croix.

While the island is often associated with the sea and beaches, it’s also important to explore its history and flora. Established in 1972 by a nonprofit, this garden was created to preserve and educate about the natural and cultural heritage of St. Croix and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The botanical garden also houses a museum and library. Visitors can learn about the island’s plants, culture, and history, while locals enjoy it as a community space for various events.
