Often referred to as the 'Top of Europe' the world's scenery doesn't get much more dramatic than the jagged peaks of Jungfraujoch. Sitting on the banks of Lake Geneva, Lavaux is Switzerland's most prominent wine region with its beautiful terraced vineyards climbing up the vertical slopes surrounding the lake. If you're an advocate of wine then head there in Summer or Autumn for wine tasting for some cool yet sun-soaked weather as you sip on glasses of local produce. However the best season for Lavaux's stunning scenery is during the winter when the terraced vineyards are covered in a thick blanket of powdery snow.

It doesn't get more iconically Swiss than the Berggasthaus Aescher, jutting out of the side of the Ebenalp Mountain in the Appenzell region to the east of the country. You can either choose to hike up the mountain to reach it or it's a short walk from the cable car station at Ebenalp.
