Cu Chi Tunnels

Often credited as a major factor for North Vietnam winning the war, the Cu Chi tunnels were one of many extensive tunnel systems outside of Ho Chi Minh. It allowed Viet Cong soldiers to hide and attack with surprise, disappearing into the well-concealed tunnels that were usually only wide enough to fit the smaller Vietnamese troops.
The tunnels are a must see for anyone interested in history, and fascinating enough even for those who aren't.

A seaside city a short journey from Ho Chi Minh, Vung Tau is perfect for enjoying the hot weather of South Vietnam by relaxing on one of the many beautiful beaches around here.
Try to head there on a weekday if you can, the beaches here can get quite popular at the weekend as locals from Ho Chi Minh head there.
Cai Be Floating Market

Cai Be is a fascinating place to get a feel for the local life as you exploring this river-based bazaar centered around a waterway coming out of the Mekong River. Vendors travel from all over South Vietnam to sell their wares on boats at the lively market. Although there are several floating markets around the Mekong Delta, Cai Be is one of the largest and oldest in the country.
While the market itself probably isn't enough to make a full day trip, most tours will often pair it with other activities around the area, such as exploring the Mekong Delta.

Southeast Asia's most important river, the Mekong winds its way through six countries, eventually flowing into the ocean just outside of Ho Chi Minh City. Tours from the city take you on a gentle boat tour down the delta, exploring its maze of a river network, islets and villages along the way
Conclusion
Tour companies are found all over the city and most hotels will be able to organize day trips for you too. If you're on a tight budget, shop around to see who offers the best prices. The day tours are generally all the same format between each company, but prices often vary.
