Dubbo : A Historical & Cultured City in Orana Region of New South Wales

Dubbo is a beautiful historic city in New South Wales, Australia and it graces across the Orana Region. It is also the most populated area around Orana region. It is a warm climate zone of humid subtropical climate. It is part of Wiradjuri country which was then habituated by indigenous Australians for approximately 40,000 years. Dubbo was named given to the city by the Wiradjuri people which means “Red Earth”. Below are some of the sightseeing and touring areas:

1. Taronga Western Plain Zoo

Taronga Western Plain Zoo is a big zoo which is located near Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. It was previously known as Western Plain Zoo but it is frequently referred to as Dubbo Zoo. In the Zoo, there are a variety of animals which tourist can sightsee with their families. The animals in the Zoo include; big cats, Black Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Giraffes, Zebra, African Elephants, Siamang Ape and other animals from all over the world. It also has a 6-kilometer circuit which goes through the bushes and through a large open style exhibits. These exhibits are accessed by visitors free of charge.

2. Dundullimal Homestead

Dundullimal Homestead is an Australian colonial slab hut type homestead which was built in the early 1840s as the head station of a 6,500-hectare squatting run. It is Dubbo's most ancient building that can be visited by the public for sightseeing. In the 1830s, brothers Charles Campbell and Dalahoy Campbell established the Dundullimal run. The interior of the Dundullimal Homestead is sophisticated for its type. It has an imposing sitting room which is a resemblance of a tent-shaped plaster ceiling; it also has a wallpaper which is reproduced from an 1850 pattern. It is also equipped with the original period furniture.

3. Old Dubbo Gaol

Old Dubbo Gao was a prison which served as a substitute for 1847 and 1862 established lockups. Dubbo Gaol possesses significant collections (i.e. the hangman’s gallows and kit) and unforgettable sightseeing experiences (among them the watchtower bird’s eye view and the dark cells). Additionally, several theatrical and night tours experiences exist in the city. It is said that between 1859 and 1966, 8 men were hanged. The prison provides any tourist with the best experience due to the raw culture seen in the architecture and the history surrounding the existence of Dubbo.

4. Shoyoen Sister City Japanese Gardens

'Shoyoen’ is a Japanese word which means strolling and refreshing garden. This garden is an inspiration from Dubbo’s Sister City that is Minokamo from Japan. The garden is full of religious symbols and its miniature landscape is a distinction of traditional Japanese Garden. The garden was designed to grow understanding and friendship by students from Kamo Agricultural and Forestry High. The sightseeing attractions which can be found within Shoyoen include waterfall, stream and a lake that symbolizes human existence. Japanese living flowers known as Koi, A tea hut which is referred to as ‘Chaoya’ and a dry garden landscape can also be found there.

5. Lowe Wines, Mudgee

Lowe Wines is the region’s award-winning organic wines, owned and operated by David Lowe, a local winemaker with over 35 years of experience. Lowe, a descendant of the original 19th-century British settlers. They produce a wide range of wines, from popular reds to the limited edition varieties, carefully cellared for several years to let them evolve in the bottle. These special wines are tested frequently to determine just when they are at their best and can be purchased at the wineries cellar door. Stop by to learn about the art of winemaking from Lowe, or drop in for a quick tasting and a bite of locally-grown organic food. 6. The Wellington Caves

The Wellington caves are limestone composed caves sited 8 kilometers south of Wellington in New South Wales. The caves faced continuous vandalism during the 19th Century until 1884. This was after they were declared a natural reserve. Gaden Cave and Phosphate Mine of which there is the availability of guided tours. While the tourists are visiting Phosphate Mine, they are briefed on the Megafauna bones which secretly hold within its muddy walls. At the Wellington Caves, there are Osewano Japanese Gardens, barbeques, camping kiosks and accommodation available.

7. Dubbo Observatory

Night Sky & Telescope Viewing offers the best astrophotography sightseeing experience when you bring your DSLR camera and use it through the telescope. Daytime viewing of Solar flares and sunspots, planet Venus, and some daytime stars Astro Mini Golf. The Dubbo Observatory is the second largest observatory in Australia with an astonishing 17-inch telescope best used during day or night. Tourist can enjoy viewing the stars and the moon both during the day and night. There is also a gift shop available where one can buy astronomy books of all ages.

8. Aladdin's Cave Bottlehouse

Aladdin's Cave Bottlehouse is a unique structure built and composed of 3,000 colorful bottles and its situated in the garden of Jan Gilmour and Brian Lewis's property. The exterior of the bottle house is considered to be more exciting. Australian heritage collectibles can be found on display under a large shed. Some of the items you can expect to find include; miniature bottles, Egyptian brass urn, goblets, and antique dolls. There is an outstanding array of Australian Eucalypts and gumnuts too. This architecture will inspire your inner creativity.

9. Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum

Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum was established in 1964 and the garden covers an area of approximately 167 hectares. It was established to preserve and conserve the unique and incredibly diverse flora of Australia. Burrendong Botanic Garden & Arboretum is not only used as a botanic garden, people regularly visit for picnics in Dubbo. Tourist can opt for self-drive tours and also go on a treasure hunt with their children. One of the most beautiful sightseeing features in the garden is an Oasis of rainforest plants known as Fern Gully.

10. Terramungamine Rock Grooves

Terramungamine Rock Grooves are 150 rock cravings which were created by Tubbagah people of Dubbo. These are ancient rocks of a historical significant located along one hundred meters of the Macquarie River. The rocks were an important gathering area space for the Tubbagah people which were used to sharpen tools and spears for the Wiradjuri people. Tourist can easily access a beach for swimming, fishing and bush camping. It was also used as a preservation of the cultural heritage as it was dedicated as an Aboriginal burial ground. This ground was referred as Tubbagah Aboriginal Burial Ground.
