Shimobe Onsen, a hot spring with ties to Takeda Shingen | 5 recommended sightseeing spots in the area
Experience gold panning at Yunooku Gold Mine Museum

The Yunooku Gold Mine Museum is located at the entrance of the Shimobe Onsen area, offering not only exhibits to see but also hands-on experiences. The museum focuses on mining operations during the Sengoku period, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of medieval gold mines through dioramas and exhibition rooms.
In the video theater, you can watch a short film themed around the dreams of people who pursued gold. One of the most popular attractions is the gold panning experience. Using traditional methods that involve separating gold from gravel, visitors can experience the joy of discovering glimmering gold specks—an exciting moment even for adults. The gold you collect can also be made into accessories.
Additionally, the museum features a mascot character originating from the museum and a souvenir shop selling gold-themed items. Since it is enjoyable for both children and adults, this is a must-visit spot.
Take a short break at the Shimo-be Golden Foot Bath

Shimo-be Golden Foot Bath is a free foot bath located near the parking lot of the Yunooku Gold Mine Museum.
In the past, Shimobe Onsen only had lukewarm water of around 30°C. However, in 2006, a high-temperature hot spring source called "Shimo-be Oku no Yu" was successfully excavated. The spring quality is an alkaline simple hot spring with a faint sulfur scent that enhances relaxation.
This foot bath is a true treat for hot spring lovers, as the water is completely free-flowing from the source with no reheating, dilution, or circulation. After exploring the museum, visitors can rest their tired feet in the warm water. In early August, the area hosts the "Yamame Festival," where visitors can catch yamame fish along the river and enjoy freshly grilled yamame on-site.
Even if you only use the foot bath, it provides ample relaxation, but visiting during an event may offer a different kind of enjoyment.

Visit the Edo-Era “Monzai-ke Residence"
The Monzai-ke Residence is a historic house preserving the traces of those who lived before us. The Monzai family, who had lived in Shimobe since the Muromachi period, managed the Yunooku Gold Mine during the Edo period and served as village heads and gatekeepers. Recognized as a national cultural property, the house remains a valuable historical relic showcasing the lifestyle of the past.
Even today, the current head of the family, Masakatsu Monzai, resides in the Monzai-ke Residence. Just inside the entrance, a glass case displays antiques left behind by his ancestors. Throughout the house, you can find a traditional stove, a sunken hearth, and other relics of history, all still in use. The cupboard, sunken hearth, and sink have water offerings placed for the gods, symbolizing protection over the household.
In addition to historical artifacts, visitors can also enjoy the surrounding mountains and sky. When visiting, please ask for Mr. Monzai, who can be found either inside the house or in an annex at the back.
