What Is Tōjinbō?

Tōjinbō, located in the northern part of Fukui Prefecture, refers to cliffs that have been designated as a National Monument of Japan. The strangely shaped cliffs are made of columnar joints of pyroxene andesite, which is said to be a globally rare rock formation found only in Korea and Norway. They were formed by volcanic activity in the new generation and erosion by rough waves. The surrounding area is packed with fun elements, such as an observation tower, sightseeing boats, and a shopping street.

The name originates from a monk of Heisen-ji Temple. There are various theories, but the sad and terrifying legend of tossing Tōjinbō, who had a violent personality and constantly troubled local citizens, off the cliff is quite famous. The highest point of Tōjinbō is 25 meters, equivalent to the 8th or 9th floor of a building. In order to preserve the stunning scenery, there are no fences or handrails. Be mindful not to go or look into dangerous places, and wear comfortable shoes.

Access

The nearest station to Tōjinbō is “Mikuni-kō Station.” It is possible to walk from the station, but it takes over 30 minutes and is not highly recommended. Therefore, using a car or a local bus is preferable. Local buses run from various places, such as Fukui Station, Awara Onsen Station, and Mikuni Station. By car, it takes about 10 minutes from Mikuni Station or about 50 minutes from Fukui Station.
