Enjoy Nature! 6 Recommended Tourist Spots in Marumori Town, Miyagi Prefecture
1. Abukuma Line Boat Ride

On a boat ride along the Abukuma River, you can enjoy the gorge eroded by the river and the ever-changing scenery along both banks throughout the seasons. The Abukuma River, known as the second largest river in the Tohoku region, was once a major transportation route for goods until the early Showa era. This boat ride preserves the history of the river transport that once played a crucial role in moving materials and supporting many people.
One of the attractions of the Abukuma Line boat ride is that the experience varies by season. In spring, a gentle and warm landscape unfolds with flowers blooming along the riverbanks. In summer, you can enjoy a cooling boat ride as the pleasant breeze sweeps across the river. In autumn, you can relish a meal featuring simmers of sweet potatoes surrounded by autumn foliage. In winter, warm up with a hot pot while snuggled up as if under a kotatsu.
2. Tachi-ya Sunflower Field

Marumori is also home to the “Tachi-ya Sunflower Field,” a spot where you can enjoy the town’s beautiful scenery. From mid to late September, sunflowers bloom in abundance, spreading a gorgeous yellow landscape over a section of rice fields.
On clear days, you can gaze upon the Zao Mountain Range. The beauty of this view has been designated as one of the “36 Views of Zao in Miyagi.” In September, the “Tachi-ya Sunflower Festival” is held, where you can pick sunflowers at a rate of 100 yen per session! Bringing home many sunflowers will surely brighten up your home.

In 2010, 12 of the buildings were registered as nationally designated tangible cultural properties, further elevating the site’s reputation as a tourist destination. Various events are held throughout the year, which is a delightful bonus for visitors to Marumori. Regularly scheduled events such as “Sairi Zattomukashi” and “Silk Washi/Papermaking Experience” are held within the mansion, so it is advisable to check the schedule in advance before planning your visit.
