A Road Disappearing into the Horizon—A Unique Hokkaido Sight

In Japan, surrounded by the sea, many people have seen the horizon over the ocean, but few have seen the land horizon. However, in Hokkaido, where vast flatlands and untouched nature remain, it is possible to see the horizon over land. Especially in the northern and eastern areas of Hokkaido, there are many spots where you can witness this magnificent natural sight.

The "Road to the Sky" is one of these places. Other famous spots include Route 106, known as the Ororon Line along the Sea of Japan, the Nusaka Line, an agricultural road connecting Sarufutsu Village in Soya District and Hamatonbetsu Town in Esashi District, and the Panorama Road Ebana along Route 581 in Kamifurano Town—all known for their views of the horizon.

Where Does the Road to the Sky Really Lead?

The "Road to the Sky" refers to National Routes 244 and 334, which connect Abashiri and Shiretoko. Including town roads and agricultural roads, the total length stretches about 28 kilometers. It’s a straight road unique to Hokkaido, with its vast land area, allowing you to see the distant horizon.

From the Shari Town side, which is the end point of the "Road to the Sky," you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view. Looking back at the straight road you’ve traveled, the varying elevation of the terrain makes it seem like the road continues endlessly. True to its name, it looks as if the road leads all the way to the sky. If you’re sightseeing around Shari Town, this is a highly recommended spot to visit.

The Nameless Observation Deck (Road to the Sky Observation Deck) is also a Must-Visit

The Nameless Observation Deck is a well-known viewing spot for capturing the beauty of the "Road to the Sky." Located on the hillside at an elevation of 75 meters, the deck itself stands about 4 meters tall and can accommodate around six people.

From this observation deck, you can see the "Road to the Sky," so be sure to climb up. Especially when you look toward the sea, you’ll be treated to a stunning view. From here, you can see the Sea of Okhotsk, windbreak forests, and farmland—all blending together beautifully. It’s a spot where you can truly experience the unique scenery of Hokkaido.
