A convenient market in Otaru! Introducing the 4 charms of “Sankaku Market”

1. Convenient location

The reason Sankaku Market is known for its convenience lies in its location. It’s only a 2-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, making it easy to stop by even during sightseeing. You can enjoy shopping or dining without wasting time.

You can stop by in the morning to check out potential souvenirs and come back later to buy them before heading home — a very efficient plan! You won’t have to worry about carrying too many souvenirs all day or rushing at the last minute. Of course, shipping services are available, so you can shop with peace of mind.

Sankaku Market is located up the stairs to the left after exiting Otaru Station. Look for the large red and white sign that says “Sankaku Market.” The entrance is a bit narrow and set back, so those unfamiliar with market atmospheres might feel hesitant to enter — but don’t worry, other tourists will already be exploring inside and nearby. Take the plunge and step in!

2. Compact layout

The market’s aisle is about 2 meters wide — not exactly spacious — and on both sides of this narrow passage, 16 shops stand in a row. If you walk about 200 meters from the Otaru Station side entrance, you’ll reach the opposite exit on National Route 5.

Sankaku Market features not only seafood and dining establishments but also stores selling marine products, vegetables, fruits, and sweets — overflowing with Hokkaido’s bounties beyond just the sea’s treasures. Because the market is compact, visitors can easily browse all the shops, compare products, and enjoy an efficient shopping experience. This compactness is one of its appealing points.

3. Open year-round

Unlike other markets, Sankaku Market has no fixed holidays. While individual stores may set their own business hours or days off, the market as a whole never closes. That means you won’t need to check for closure dates in advance or worry about finding it shut when you arrive.

Opening hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and restaurants open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Because the best seasonal ingredients vary by region across Hokkaido, it’s a good idea to ask the shopkeepers directly for recommendations of the day. You may even get to try some samples or receive a little extra as a bonus!

Each restaurant offers a rich menu, and some even cook and serve ingredients you’ve purchased at the market. Since lines form early in the morning, if there’s a specific restaurant you want to visit, check ahead of time and consider arriving early or visiting during off-peak hours.

4. The market’s motto: “Simply cheap!!”

All the shops in Sankaku Market share the same motto: “Simply cheap!” Displayed proudly on signs, this motto reflects the merchants’ daily efforts to provide high-quality products at reasonable prices. While “Sankaku Market” attracts many tourists, it’s also beloved by locals, offering a wide selection of high-quality, budget-friendly items.

◎ Summary

With over 50 years of history, the market’s retro atmosphere and the unique selection of goods at its 16 shops make “Sankaku Market” a must-visit. Whether you fill up at a restaurant, hunt for souvenirs, or simply enjoy browsing, you’ll find that “Sankaku Market” is always open, affordable, and wonderfully convenient for a great shopping experience.
