First-time Hawaii Trip | Oahu Island, Hawaii Island, Maui Island, Molokai Island, Lanai Island, Kauai Island

What Islands Make Up Hawaii?

Let's first check the location of the Hawaiian Islands.

◆ The Gateway to Hawaii: Oahu Island

Honolulu and Waikiki are located on Oahu Island. Just as many people imagine "Hawaii = Oahu Island," Oahu is truly the heart of Hawaii. Most visitors arriving in Hawaii land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, located in the southern part of Oahu.

◆ There's a Reason for the Island Arrangement!

The Hawaiian Islands are lined up in a straight line from Kauai in the northwest to Hawaii Island in the southeast. It may seem mysterious, but there's a reason behind it. The Pacific Plate, on which the Hawaiian Islands rest, is moving northwest. Because of this, the islands in the northwest are older, while those in the southeast are newer.
This means that Kauai was the first island to form, followed by Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, and Maui.
The youngest and most recently formed island is Hawaii Island, located in the far southeast, and its geological activity is ongoing! In the southeastern part of Hawaii Island, Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, known for its frequent eruptions.
Now, let's take a look at each island one by one.

1. Oahu Island

Oahu Island, the political and economic center of Hawaii, is the most visited island in the state. It is an ideal destination for all types of travelers—honeymooners, couples, families, groups, and even solo travelers. Whether it's your first trip to Hawaii or your first time traveling abroad, Oahu is a perfect choice.
Since Oahu has many attractions, we have divided it into five main areas. Let’s explore their unique features and must-visit tourist spots.

① Honolulu

Honolulu, located in the southeastern part of Oahu, is the capital of Hawaii. It is the political, economic, and cultural hub, home to about 70% of the state's total population.
This is also where Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is located. As a hotspot for food, shopping, and entertainment, Honolulu is the liveliest and most tourist-friendly area on Oahu.

Downtown Honolulu features government buildings and office towers.

Waikiki Beach, one of the world’s top beach resorts, where visitors can enjoy marine sports and swimming all year round. This is exactly the Hawaii many people imagine!

Waikiki offers a variety of accommodations, including resort hotels, condominiums, and designer hotels, so you can choose according to your preference.

Along Kalakaua Avenue, Waikiki’s main street, you’ll find:
International Market Place and Royal Hawaiian Center.
