Deep Osaka Attractions! Enjoy Osaka’s Cuisine and Culture in Shinsekai
1. Shinsekai’s Symbol: Tsutenkaku

What comes to mind when you think of Shinsekai? For many, it’s Tsutenkaku Tower. Originally built before World War II, its design was modeled after the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Though destroyed in the postwar era, it was rebuilt into the landmark we see today. By purchasing a ticket, you can ascend to the observation deck—94.5 m above ground—for panoramic views of Osaka.
Admission (individual): Adults (high school and up) is ¥700 and Children (ages 5–12) is ¥400.
(Note: set to increase to ¥800 for adults as of July 2019.)

On the 5th floor is the Billiken Shrine, home to Osaka’s beloved mascot, Billiken. Rubbing Billiken’s feet is said to bring good luck, making it a hugely popular photo spot. Other floors contain shops selling Glico sweets and Osaka souvenirs—perfect for picking up Osaka-style gifts.
2. Shinsekai’s Gourmet Specialty—Kushikatsu! 3 Top Recommended Shops
When traveling, you want to try the local specialties. In Shinsekai, that’s kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). With so many kushikatsu shops, it can be hard to choose—here are three must-visits:
■ Daruma
Founded in 1929, Daruma is the most famous kushikatsu shop in Shinsekai, beloved by locals. With an izakaya-style atmosphere, its menu includes seafood, vegetables, and more. Daruma’s skewers are characterized by a light, thin coating of fine panko crumbs—crispy without greasiness. Only 12 counter seats mean long lines on weekends and evenings.

■ Omiya Honten
Also famed for its lines, Omiya’s kushikatsu batter has a unique texture: first crispy, then pleasantly chewy—a must-try difference.

■ Yaekatsu Honten
With more seats than other shops, Yaekatsu often has shorter waits, even when a line forms. Its kushikatsu use coarser panko for a sturdier crust. Don’t miss the doteyaki (slow-cooked beef tendon), another Osaka specialty.

3. Osaka’s Famous Takoyaki! Shinsekai’s Recommended Shop
Like kushikatsu, takoyaki shops dot Shinsekai. The standout is “Shinsekai Kankan,” frequently featured in media, with photos of TV crews lining its walls.
Kankan’s takoyaki have a fluffy, molten-centered batter topped with sweet sauce and mayo. Each ball contains a generous piece of octopus—perfectly balanced with the soft batter, all at a very reasonable price.

4. Shinsekai’s Vibe: Lively, Fun, and Warm

Because TV often highlights Shinsekai’s colorful characters—eccentric locals in quirky outfits—some visitors wonder, “Is it scary? Is it safe?” While you’ll see plenty of unique personalities, most residents are friendly, and Shinsekai’s bustling, down-to-earth charm feels welcoming. In the evenings, you’ll find not only young people but also families dining out together.
5. How to Get to Shinsekai
