Even the Japanese Imperial Family sent prosthetic limbs and other aid for the wounded, demonstrating humanitarian compassion. The people of Izumiotsu also treated the prisoners with warmth and respect, and friendly exchanges were common between the locals and the Russians who were allowed to go out.
