5 Must-See Scenic Spots in Fukuoka Prefecture – Discover the Charms of Fukuoka Beyond Just Hakata!
1. A Night View That Will Take Your Breath Away – Mount Sarakura

After enjoying Fukuoka's sightseeing during the day, why not take in a stunning view at night? Mount Sarakura is one of the top night view spots in Kitakyushu. Its breathtaking scenery has even been chosen as one of Japan’s Three Great Night Views. At the summit, there is a viewing restaurant and vending machines, so the area is well-equipped for you to fully enjoy the nightscape.
In summer, a beer garden is held where you can enjoy delicious beer and snacks while gazing at the night view. For those who love hiking, there are well-maintained trails for daytime mountain climbing. If you're with children or elderly companions and don’t feel confident hiking, you can use the ropeway or slope car.
When you visit Fukuoka, be sure to experience Mount Sarakura, which offers two different faces — day and night.
2. A Sense of History and Beauty – Mojiko Retro District

Moji has prospered as the gateway to Kyushu. The Mojiko Retro District here is home to many historic buildings, and its night view is known for its beauty.
Moji flourished from the Heian period as a strategic point linking the capital to Dazaifu. The Moji Port was built during the Meiji era and flourished as an international trading port. In the Taisho era, more than 200 foreign ships would arrive each month, bringing great prosperity to the town.
The buildings in the Mojiko Retro District preserve the atmosphere of this prosperous era. You can feel the ambiance unique to a historic port town. This area also has an observation room where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Kanmon Straits.

3. A Colorful Scenic Wonderland – Kawachi Wisteria Garden
Boasting a vast area of 3,000 tsubo (approx. 9,900 m²), Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a municipal wisteria garden located in Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyushu City. It features beautifully colored wisteria in full bloom. Opened in 1977 by Masao Higuchi, the garden has gained international fame for its scale and beauty. In 2012, it was selected as one of the world’s most beautiful views, and since then, countless foreign tourists have visited to see this magnificent sight. The best time to see the wisteria is from April to May, and some even plan their trips to Fukuoka just to match this season.
A unique feature of Kawachi Wisteria Garden is that the admission fee changes every year. Depending on the blooming status, the fee can vary between 400 yen and 1500 yen. Aside from wisteria season, the garden is also popular during autumn for its stunning foliage, with over 700 maple trees welcoming visitors.

4. Experience the Season Through Autumn Leaves – Mount Hiko
Mount Hiko is a 1,199-meter-high mountain that spans the border of Fukuoka and Oita prefectures. It is known as a sacred mountain visited by many for ascetic training. Recently, it has gained popularity as a scenic spot in autumn (October to November) when the vast mountain becomes dyed in brilliant fall colors.
The state of the autumn foliage varies depending on location on the mountain, so you can enjoy different scenery depending on when you go. For instance, the lower you go on the mountain, the later the leaves change color — by around November, you can enjoy a view of the entire mountain blanketed in red and gold.

5. A World-Class Scenic View – Hiraodai

Hiraodai is famous for its grand scenery. Located about 40 minutes by car from Kokura in Kitakyushu City, it is a karst plateau.
Its vastness is so impressive that many people feel the landscape seems un-Japanese. Hiraodai’s karst terrain was formed gradually by rainwater and groundwater shaping limestone over time. Its enormous scale stretches across five regions, making it a rare geological formation.
This karst plateau has been designated a national natural monument and is well maintained, making it an accessible scenic site for tourists. At Mt. Nukisan, located at the northern end of Hiraodai (elevation 712m), many visitors enjoy hiking. The range of mountains between 400 to 700 meters creates a unique panoramic view. There are also limestone caves nearby, so you can explore them together with your trip.
