2. Narusawa Ice Cave
The Narusawa Ice Cave was designated a national natural monument in 1929. It's a rare ice cave globally, drawing visitors from around the world. Located on the eastern side of Aokigahara Forest in Narusawa, the cave maintains an average temperature of about 3°C year-round.
The main highlight is the illuminated ice pillars at the deepest point of the cave. These sparkling ice formations glowing under blue light are a favorite on social media and have attracted global attention. On peak days, the cave welcomes up to 3,000 visitors. It’s a must-visit spot in Narusawa. Entry is 350 yen per adult, and it takes about 15 minutes to walk through.
Nearby is the Fugaku Wind Cave, another horizontal lava cave. Exploring both caves adds a sense of adventure to your trip. Both are lava-formed, and inside, you'll find icicles and ice columns within dark rock chambers, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The ice comes from natural mineral water seeping from lava and may sometimes drip from the ceiling—quite a surprise!
Guided tours covering both the Ice Cave and Wind Cave are available by reservation only—recommended for those who want a fuller experience.
