Public safety in Central Africa remains unstable. Please pay close attention to safety information.

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country located in the middle of Africa, as its name suggests. Covered with savannas and tropical rainforests, the country lies near the equator and experiences hot weather all year round. Since gaining independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic has experienced repeated coups and changes in government. As a result, public security has always been unstable, and civil unrest continues to this day. Cotton and coffee are the main exports, but the economy is stagnant, and the population continues to suffer from poverty.

Although no terrorist attacks have been reported, armed groups have been kidnapping and killing civilians throughout the country. Particularly in the capital city, Bangui, serious incidents occur frequently, making the situation unpredictable. Due to the extremely poor security situation, the highest-level travel advisory, “Level 4 – Evacuate,” has been issued.

1. A travel advisory is currently in effect—do not travel.

At present, a “Level 4” danger advisory has been issued for the entire Central African Republic. “Level 4” means that the security situation is extremely poor and highly dangerous. Travel to the country is strictly prohibited for any reason. If you are currently staying in the Central African Republic, you are strongly advised to evacuate to another country immediately.

In particular, in the capital Bangui, clashes have occurred in the past between anti-government forces and Christian militias, resulting in deaths. Even recently, a murder incident escalated into riots that claimed more than 20 lives. During a national referendum, gunfights also broke out between opposing factions, resulting in many casualties.

As seen above, the Central African Republic remains in an extremely dangerous and unstable state. Considering the recent rise in global terrorist activity, travel should be completely avoided. It is essential to regularly check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ overseas safety information and monitor how the situation develops.

◎ Summary

The Central African Republic is in a very dangerous condition, making travel there impossible. Civil unrest could break out at any moment, potentially leading to fatalities.

The country itself is blessed with abundant nature, including vast savannas. It has two UNESCO World Heritage national parks that are home to many rare species. Once the situation stabilizes and security improves, these magnificent heritage sites will hopefully be open to many visitors—but that time still seems far away.
