A place where you can find nostalgic goodies! Introducing popular souvenirs from Kyonan Town
1. Kyonan Rakuichi Karintō
If you’re going to buy souvenirs from Kyonan Town, “Kyonan Rakuichi Karintō” is a must. This is a popular product sold at the roadside station “Hota Elementary School.” “Kyonan Rakuichi” is the direct-sales market created by remodeling the gym of Hota Elementary School, which was closed down.
The karintō everyone is curious about is packed with brown sugar to the fullest and has a great reputation for its delicious taste. Above all, the packaging, which is designed to resemble an elementary school’s school bag, is very striking. Its nostalgic look will make you reach for it without thinking. It’s also recommended as a snack to go with tea.
2. Pī Miso
Just like the “Kyonan Rakuichi Karintō” introduced earlier, “Pī Miso” is another fascinating item available at the roadside station “Hota Elementary School.” In fact, this was something that was actually served as a school lunch in schools within Chiba Prefecture.
As its name suggests, “Pī Miso” is roasted peanuts (rachis/peanuts) coated in miso and sugar. Its sweet and savory flavor makes it perfect as a side for rice or as a snack with alcohol. It can be used for any purpose—served with tea, as a snack for children, and more. Why not take home this soul food of Chiba residents as a souvenir?

3. Lemon-flavored Gâteau
Kyonan Town has taiyaki known as “natural.” “Natural” refers to taiyaki baked using a single mold (itchō-yaki), meaning each fish-shaped cake is baked one by one in individual molds rather than in a multi-connected mold. These days, it has become rare to see taiyaki baked this way, but the local confectioner Kyonan Town is proud of, “Densuke Seika,” still offers this traditional “natural” taiyaki.
At “Densuke Seika,” which sells various Japanese sweets such as dango, dorayaki, and “natural” taiyaki, the item we especially recommend is the “Lemon-flavored Gâteau.” The refreshing aroma of lemon stimulates the appetite, and this cake has a moist texture that makes it very satisfying to eat. As a Western-style sweet made by a Japanese confectionery shop, it pairs well with both black tea and green tea!

4. Sun-dried Dried Fish
Since Kyonan Town faces the sea, it has an abundance of marine products. When choosing souvenirs, dried fish that keeps longer is better than fresh fish. At “Chōchin-ya Himono-ten,” a shop with a history of over 100 years, they sell dried fish that are all made by hand, one by one.
From butterflying the fish to salting them, every step is done by hand. The perfect amount of salt draws out the umami of the fish, and once you try it, you’ll be hooked! No additives or preservatives are used at all, and they are made using traditional methods, so even small children can enjoy them safely. They are also perfect as a gift.
