How to Enjoy the Astonishing Natural Scenery of Ōboke and Koboke

What are Ōboke and Koboke?

Ōboke and Koboke are valleys carved out by the raging flow of the Yoshino River over the course of about 200 million years. The valleys stretch for about 8 km.
There are several theories about the origin of their names. One says it comes from the old word hoki, meaning “cliff.” Another says it comes from the phrase “dangerous whether walking with big steps or small steps,” hence the names Ōboke (big steps dangerous) and Koboke (small steps dangerous).
Ōboke is also a precious place where you can catch a glimpse of how the Japanese archipelago was formed. For this reason, it was designated as a National Natural Monument in 2014 and as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 2015.

Enjoy the Valley Scenery While Walking

There are many ways to enjoy Ōboke and Koboke, but walking around the area is one of the most rewarding. Especially for those who want to immerse themselves in the unique beauty of the valleys, a walking tour is recommended. Nearby is Iya, said to be where the defeated Heike clan once lived, but since it is some distance away, why not enjoy a walk from Koboke Station to Ōboke Station as well?

Experience a River Cruise by Sightseeing Boat

A sightseeing boat ride through Oboke Gorge is also one of the highlights for fully enjoying the beauty of Oboke and Koboke. To board the sightseeing boat for the Oboke Gorge cruise, please purchase your ticket at the front desk located on the first floor of Restaurant Oboke Mannaka.

Roadside Station “Oboke” – A Place Where You Can Enjoy Sightseeing

Roadside Station “Oboke” is located at a spot where you can overlook the entire Oboke Gorge. Here are some recommended highlights to help you make the most of your visit.

■ Yokai House and Stone Museum

The Yokai House and Stone Museum are located inside Roadside Station “Oboke.” At the Yokai House, you can view exhibits about Japanese yokai (supernatural creatures) and enjoy answering quizzes. The Stone Museum features displays of raw gemstones and even meteorites that came from outer space.

■ Museum Shop and Local Specialties

Roadside Station “Oboke” not only has a museum shop but also sells local specialty products. At the museum shop, you can purchase yokai-themed souvenirs and natural stones. Local specialties include regional sake, soba noodles, and fresh vegetables. A morning market is also held on the first Sunday of every month (9:00 AM–11:30 AM), so if your timing is right, be sure to check it out.

◎ Aim for the Autumn Foliage Season

Oboke and Koboke are scenic spots where you can enjoy different landscapes throughout the year—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, autumn foliage, and snowy views in winter. If you’re planning a visit, autumn is especially recommended. The contrast between the deep blue Yoshino River flowing through the gorge and the vibrant red and orange leaves is truly stunning and perfect for photography.
