Just like a painting! 4 Hidden Gem Spots & Beaches on Lanai Island Accessible Only by 4WD!

1. Polihua Beach

First up is the hidden beach spot of Lanai Island, “Polihua Beach.” Located in the northwest part of Lanai Island, this beach offers a view of Molokai Island across the sea. Due to strong currents, swimming is not allowed, but the approximately 3 km stretch of quiet sandy shore is perfect for relaxing. You may even spot green sea turtles or humpback whales during the winter season.
The northern part of Lanai Island is a remote area, so if you’re heading to Polihua Beach by rental car, a 4WD is absolutely necessary!

2. Luahiwa Petroglyphs

Drive about five minutes southeast from Lanai City, and you’ll reach the rare hidden sightseeing spot known as the “Luahiwa Petroglyphs.” Along the steep road ascending Mount Lanaihale, you’ll find reddish protruding rocks inscribed with mysterious petroglyphs (ancient rock carvings).
The Luahiwa Petroglyphs are in excellent condition and very clear. They make a great photo spot on Lanai Island. However, since there are no signs or markers, it can be difficult to find, so it’s best to ask hotel staff for directions or check a map in advance.

3. Shipwreck Beach

Introducing another hidden beach and sightseeing spot on Lanai Island that requires a 4WD—“Shipwreck Beach.” Lanai Island’s residents are concentrated in Lanai City, making the island as a whole a natural hidden gem. The spots introduced here are all places accessible only by 4WD, without any signs or conveniences. However, that lack of commercialization is exactly what makes the scenery so spectacular!

When you want to spend a quiet, relaxing time surrounded by untouched nature, visit one of Lanai Island’s hidden and remote gems.

4. Kahale Palaoa

Kahale Palaoa on Lanai Island, Hawaii, is a hidden beach gem. In Hawaiian, “Kahale Palaoa” means “House of the Whale’s Tooth.” It is located in the southeastern part of Lanai Island and can only be accessed by 4WD.
At this beach, you can enjoy the tropical atmosphere created by beach morning glories (pōhuehue) that bloom with pink flowers in the morning and the swaying palm trees. Walking along the powdery sand while collecting seashells is also a pleasant activity. It takes about an hour to reach Kahale Palaoa from Lanai City, so be sure to check the road and weather conditions before your trip. Why not spend a quiet, relaxing time surrounded by the natural beauty of this secluded Lanai Island beach?
