With its proximity to the border of Mexico and large population of Mexican immigrants, Los Angeles is the undisputedly one of the greatest places to chow down on this region's cuisine. Restaurants and eateries feature a large range of both traditional dishes and unique Californian inspired takes on Mexican food. While asking the locals of LA could give you a hundred places and probably cause a few arguments along the way, these spots are guaranteed to give you a good meal.

The Best Places for Mexican Food in Los Angeles


Small yet full of character, Sonoratown is an institute in the downtown area, famous for their carne asada tacos in Northern Mexican style. The menu is small with just a few items, but everything is made to perfection with fresh ingredients. The wait can be a little long at peak times due to its central location, but it's worth it for some of the best tacos you'll find north of Mexico.

Guelaguetza Restaurante

Specializing in the delicious food of Oaxaca, Guelaguetza is easily one of the most famous restaurants in LA, an achievement they've managed to hold onto for years. Started in 1994 by a Mexican couple, the restaurant's goal was to showcase Oaxacan culture and authentic dishes from the region, which is known as one of the most famous cuisines of Mexico. With a huge menu of Oaxacan classics, Guelaguetza does well to give every dish the same amount of care and love that shows in its flavor.

If you're a advocate of seafood, Holbox is the place to go. With a nod from the Michelin guide, Holbox offers delicious raw and cooked seafood dishes prepared Yucatan-style. You'll find a huge range of seafood based dishes such as scallop or sea urchin tacos and ceviche. The seafood is brought in dailyand incredibly fresh. If you can't decide what to go for, make sure to try the tasting menu.

Broken Spanish

For high-end and beautifully presented Mexican dishes with a stylish, modern interior that'll impress your date, you can't do much better than Broken Spanish. The restaurant takes classic traditional dishes like tamales and chicharron, giving them a modern and refined twist that you won't find anywhere else. Chef Ray Garcia has created a dining experience like no other with Broken Spanish and while you'll pay quite a bit extra for all the additions, it's highly worth it to try out at least once while you're in the city.


It's not so difficult to find amazing Mexican restaurants and eateries in Los Angeles, the city is full of authentic and modern joints worth making the trip to. Like most cities however, there are some less than favorable places too, just make sure to check the reviews beforehand, the locals know what good Mexican food should taste like.
