History of Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle was originally built as a fortress by the Visconti family, who ruled Milan. It was later rebuilt and expanded in 1450 by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza, becoming the seat of power for the Sforza family during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Over the years, the castle underwent numerous renovations and expansions. Parts of it were destroyed by Napoleon but were restored in the 19th century, giving it the long and storied history it boasts today.

The tower at the main entrance, known as the "Filarete Tower," is surrounded by square-shaped corridors with a courtyard on the inside.

◆ Sala delle Asse

Located on the first floor of the castle's northeastern corner, this room houses one of Leonardo da Vinci's significant works in tempera. The ceiling features an intricate canopy of 16 trees and intertwining plants. Due to severe deterioration, ongoing restoration projects are in place to preserve this artistic treasure.

In addition to the above, there are other rooms such as the Colombina Room, which displays a wide variety of statues, and the Flag Room, which displays large Gobelin banners and tapestries, so you can see a wide variety of works.
