Mostar: 5 Destinations to Experience Nature, Architecture, and History—Discover More Than Just World Heritage Sites!

1. Stari Most

The main tourist attraction in Mostar is the 16th-century bridge, "Stari Most," also known as a "negative World Heritage Site." It was destroyed by Croatian soldiers during the Mostar conflict in 1993 but was later rebuilt, with the restoration completed in 2004. This bridge is a symbol of Mostar and attracts many tourists.

Crossing the bridge, which separates areas still inhabited by different ethnic groups, allows you to experience a stark change in atmosphere. The arch of the bridge is made of tenelija, a local stone, and its distortion is due to the irregular placement of the stones. Take note of these details when visiting.

Jumping from this bridge into the Neretva River has been a tradition since the mid-17th century, with diving competitions held during summer. Only trained locals perform this dangerous feat, but you might catch them practicing. Don’t miss its illuminated beauty at night.

2. Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar

The area surrounding Stari Most on both sides is the World Heritage-listed "Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar." This area reflects a mix of Croatian, Serbian, Turkish, and Islamic cultures. It is a fun place to stroll, with many restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops. There are also monuments and museums that preserve the memory of the conflict, allowing you to experience both the scenery and history of the area.

Be cautious when walking on the cobblestone streets as they can be slippery when wet. The Old City of Mostar is especially enchanting at night when it is illuminated.

3. Koski Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque

A tourist spot that symbolizes the multiculturality of Mostar is Koski Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque. It is a unique destination in a region with many Muslim residents and is situated by the Neretva River, close to Stari Most. This modest mosque features a colorful interior, offering visitors a fresh and lively atmosphere.

The courtyard of Koski Mehmed Pasha’s Mosque is a perfect place to admire Stari Most. For an additional fee, you can climb the tall and narrow minaret for a panoramic view of Mostar. The staircase inside is very narrow and can get crowded during peak seasons, but it is highly recommended for those who want great photos.

4. Blagaj Tekija Monastery

Blagaj Tekija Monastery is a tourist attraction about 30 minutes by bus from Mostar. It is a former monastery of the Ottoman Empire built around 1663 along the Buna River. It was established for Dervishes, Islamic monks, and remains a site visited by believers and tourists. The small building combines Ottoman and Mediterranean styles and is built jutting out over the Buna River, making it a must-see.

The monastery is especially beautiful in spring when the Buna River flows abundantly. Among the Tekijas worldwide, this one stands out for its exceptional beauty. You can also enjoy Bosnian and Turkish cuisine at the on-site restaurant while admiring the wonderful view. Though it’s a bit far from Mostar, it’s a highly recommended destination.

5. Kravica Falls

Kravica Falls is a tourist spot where you can experience the beautiful nature of Mostar. With a height of approximately 25 meters and a width of about 120 meters, it is one of Mostar’s iconic waterfalls. It is open to visitors only from May to October. Although it is a designated nature conservation area, it is a popular relaxation spot for both tourists and locals. There are picnic areas and campgrounds nearby, making it ideal for outdoor travelers.

During the summer, you can also swim in the pool below the falls. There are cafes and athletic facilities in the area, but if you plan to swim, don’t forget to bring towels and other necessities. The recommended season to visit is spring when the water volume is high. The collaboration between the fresh greenery and Kravica Falls creates a special charm.
