3. Gifu Castle, A Castle with 800 Years of History
Gifu Castle, perched atop the summit of Mount Kinka, has a legacy stretching back over 800 years. Originally built in 1201 (Ken'nin Year 1) during the Kamakura period by Nikaido Yukimasa, a steward of the shogunate, it was known for its strategic importance and reputation as an unassailable fortress during the Warring States era. The castle also served as the residence of the famed Saito Dosan.
Historically, it has been said, "He who controls Mino controls the world." Oda Nobunaga captured the castle and renamed it "Gifu Castle," previously known as "Inabayama Castle." Although it was dismantled in 1601 (Keicho Year 6) under Tokugawa Ieyasu's orders, it was reconstructed in 1956 (Showa 31). Today, visitors to the main keep can enjoy panoramic views of landmarks such as the Nagara River, Mount Ena, and Mount Ibuki. The castle is illuminated every evening until 10 PM, offering a magical atmosphere for nighttime visits.

4. Yoro Falls, The Symbol of Yoro Town
Nestled in the tranquil recesses of Yoro Park at the base of Mount Yoro, Yoro Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder and a symbol of Yoro Town. The waterfall measures approximately 30 meters in height and 4 meters in width, creating an awe-inspiring sight amidst its serene surroundings.
Steeped in folklore, Yoro Falls is famously associated with a legend in which its waters were said to turn into sake. This enchanting cascade has earned a spot on Japan's top 100 waterfalls and has inspired artists like Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, who immortalized it in their works. The pure, sparkling water pouring over the rugged cliffs is both invigorating and majestic. Every July 1, the Yoro Falls Opening Ceremony heralds the summer season, attracting visitors for a unique celebration of nature and tradition.
Beyond the falls, Yoro Park features the sacred Kikusui Spring, shrines, temples, and an array of sports and recreational facilities. In spring, the park dazzles with 3,000 cherry blossom trees, while autumn brings a brilliant display of red and gold from the maples and Japanese oaks. The area is a celebrated destination, included in the Hida-Mino Top 33 Cherry Blossoms and Autumn Leaves lists.

6. Visit Formosan Squirrels at "Mt. Kinka Ropeway"
Established in 1954, the Mt. Kinka Ropeway holds the distinction of being Japan's first aerial ropeway built after World War II. The ropeway connects Gifu Park to the summit of Mt. Kinka in just 4 minutes.
As you ascend, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the lush greenery blanketing Mt. Kinka, the serene Nagara River, and the sprawling cityscape of Gifu. Notably, Mt. Kinka Ropeway was the first in Japan to use the term “ropeway,” solidifying its place in history as the original.
At the summit, you’ll find the charming Squirrel Village, home to wild Formosan squirrels. Within a spacious, sunlight-filled enclosure surrounded by unique "shinobi-gaeshi" barriers that keep the squirrels safe, these playful creatures thrive in their natural habitat. On the 11th of each month (except August), visitors may even catch a glimpse of the vibrant mascot, Riro-chan, spreading cheer near the boarding area.
