How to Explore Tokushima’s Hidden Power Spot – Todoroki Falls
What are the Todoroki Ninety-Nine Waterfalls?
Todoroki Ninety-Nine Waterfalls is the collective name for the waterfalls surrounding Todoroki Shrine. While there aren’t literally 99 waterfalls, the name reflects their abundance, almost as if there are 99. Among them, Todoroki Hontaki, with a breathtaking drop of 58 meters, is the centerpiece and is revered as the sacred body of Todoroki Hontaki Shrine.
This awe-inspiring natural wonder exudes a powerful energy, making it a site of deep reverence and connection. Every second Sunday of November, the area comes alive with an autumn festival. The highlight, Takitogyo, involves carrying a mikoshi (portable shrine) into the waterfall’s basin—a dramatic spectacle unique to this shrine that shouldn’t be missed.
Todoroki Hontaki: The Heart of Todoroki Hontaki Shrine
Todoroki Hontaki is a sacred waterfall revered as the spiritual embodiment of Todoroki Hontaki Shrine. Near its basin stands a stone monument inscribed with "Todoroki Shrine Aramitama Chinza," signifying the presence of the shrine’s sacred spirit.
A protruding rock often obscures the full view of the falls when water levels are low. However, on days with moderate flow, visitors can approach the basin and enjoy the stunning sight. The waterfall is sometimes referred to as "unreachable" due to the inability to get close to its base, adding an air of mystique. Surrounded by rugged rocks, it offers an intimate and spiritual experience, making it clear why it has been a site of worship for centuries.
Explore the Scenic 1.5 km Walking Trail
A scenic walking trail, approximately 1.5 km long, weaves through the Todoroki Ninety-Nine Waterfalls, from Todoroki Hontaki to the uppermost Nabariki Waterfall. A leisurely stroll takes about two hours, providing ample time to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of nature.
The trail features waterfalls such as Todoroki Hontaki, Niju Waterfall, Fudo Waterfall, Yokomi Waterfall, Funagata Waterfall, Marubuchi Waterfall, Torikaeshi Waterfall, Ootori-Kotori Waterfall, Sanjussansai Waterfall, and Nabariki Waterfall. Each waterfall has its own charm, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Todoroki Hontaki, the first waterfall you encounter, boasts the tallest drop in Tokushima Prefecture, setting a dramatic tone for the journey.
Reaching the Stunning Nabariki Waterfall
Nabariki Waterfall marks the endpoint of the trail and is located at the uppermost section of the Todoroki Ninety-Nine Waterfalls. This majestic 15-meter straight waterfall is a rewarding sight after a 15-minute walk from Torikaeshi Waterfall.
Above Nabariki Waterfall, a trail leads to a sacred torii gate and a small shrine where the waterfall is enshrined as a deity.
While the journey to Nabariki Waterfall takes about an hour each way, the experience is enriched by the other waterfalls along the way, making it an unforgettable adventure. If you’re visiting Todoroki Ninety-Nine Waterfalls, don’t miss the chance to explore all the way to Nabariki Waterfall.
