[Kochi Prefecture, Otoyo Town] A Power Spot Related to Hibari Misora! The Charm of Sugi no Osugi
Japan's Largest Giant Cedar

Sugi no Osugi is considered one of Japan’s oldest and most historic giant cedar trees, with an estimated age of over 3,000 years. Due to its beauty and historical significance, it was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1924.
This giant cedar is split into two massive trunks at its base, known as "North Osugi" and "South Osugi." The South Osugi is slightly larger, with a root circumference of approximately 20 meters and a height of 60 meters, while the North Osugi has a root circumference of 16.5 meters and a height of 57 meters. Many visitors are left in awe by their sheer size. The shrine grounds where these two ancient trees stand create a mystical atmosphere.
Many famous figures, including Hibari Misora, have visited Sugi no Osugi to pay their respects. Within the shrine grounds, there is a memorial monument and a song monument dedicated to Hibari Misora, where the melody of "Kawa no Nagare no You ni" plays.
Visit Yasaka Shrine

The majestic Sugi no Osugi, boasting a 3,000-year history—the longest in Japan—stands within the grounds of Yasaka Shrine. Here, you can experience the mysterious and sacred aura emitted by this ancient cedar. Its indescribable grandeur and mystical atmosphere captivate visitors, making it a true power spot.
It is famously said that singer Hibari Misora once visited this shrine and prayed, "Please make me Japan's number one singer." Many believe that wishes and dreams prayed for here will come true.
However, wishes made half-heartedly may be rejected. It is important to pray with strong determination and genuine intent. It is also believed that speaking your wish out loud increases the chances of it coming true, so why not give it a try? While soaking in the refreshing energy emitted by the two great cedar trees, why not pay a visit to Yasaka Shrine and make your prayer?
Misora Hibari’s Song Monument at "Osugi no Sono"
In 1947 (Showa 22), at the age of 9, Misora Hibari made her debut. During a local tour, she was involved in a bus accident but miraculously survived. Following this, she visited Sugi no Osugi and prayed, "Please make me Japan's number one singer."
Five years later, at 14, she returned to Otoyo Town to visit the people who had supported her and once again paid her respects at the giant cedar. She later became a legendary star of the Showa era and passed away in 1989 (Heisei 1), with many fans mourning her loss.
Today, to honor Misora Hibari’s legacy and keep her memory alive in people's hearts, "Osugi no Sono" was established. When standing in front of the song monument, a sensor activates and plays melodies such as "Kawa no Nagare no You ni."
