Nishi-hama is located on the northern side of Hateruma Island, about 400 meters west of Hateruma Port Passenger Terminal, where high-speed ferries from Ishigaki arrive.
Since there are no public buses or taxis on the island, the best way to reach Nishi-hama is by renting a bicycle or car from the port. It’s easy to find, as there are clear signposts leading to the beach.

When is the Best Time to Visit Nishi-hama?
Although it’s recommended to explore Hateruma Island counterclockwise, Nishi-hama is best visited immediately after arriving by ferry from Ishigaki to avoid the crowds that build up over time.
For those staying overnight on the island, the best time to visit is before the first ferry from Ishigaki arrives, allowing for a more serene and private experience.
Additionally, an exclusive treat for overnight visitors is the breathtaking sunset view after the last ferry to Ishigaki has departed.
Are there showers, vending machines, or shops at Nishihama Beach?

Nishi-hama has coin lockers and shower facilities available. Occasionally, small stalls rent out snorkeling gear, but there are no vending machines or shops around. It's best to buy drinks like sports drinks or juice, as well as some snacks, at the port or village before heading there.
Spot a Sea Turtle! But Don’t Forget These Important Safety Tips at Nishi Beach
While snorkeling at Nishi Beach, you might have a rare chance to encounter sea turtles and other fascinating marine creatures. However, always remember that they are wild animals—avoid touching or disturbing them. It’s best to admire them from a respectful distance. Also, be responsible and never leave trash behind—always take your waste with you to help keep the beach pristine.
Another crucial thing to watch out for is the rip current, a strong water flow that can pull swimmers away from the shore. If you feel yourself being carried out to sea, don’t fight against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shore to escape its grip. Once you are free from the current, calmly swim back to the shore. Panicking will only exhaust you, so stay composed and move strategically.
Remember, the only thing you should take home from this trip is wonderful memories!
◎ Discover the Hidden Beauty of a Remote Paradise at Japan’s Southernmost Edge
Hateruma Island, named for being Japan’s southernmost inhabited island, is a secluded gem that not everyone gets to visit. Since the high-speed ferry travels across open waters, trips can be frequently canceled due to rough conditions. In some cases, visitors may be unable to reach the island or return to Ishigaki or Iriomote (Ohara). Because of this, Hateruma has earned the nickname “The Phantom Beach.” However, if you are lucky enough to set foot here, its stunning scenery will surely leave you in awe.
For a faster but more expensive alternative, travelers can take a Sango Heli helicopter taxi from Ishigaki to Hateruma Airport.
Since you’ve already made it this far, make the most of your trip! Beyond Nishi Beach, be sure to visit the Southernmost Monument of Japan and explore everything this unique island has to offer!
