What is Oirase Gorge?

Many people may not know how to read "奥入瀬"—it is pronounced "Oirase." The only river flowing out of Lake Towada is the Oirase River, located on the eastern side of the lake.
From downstream, the gorge is home to numerous famous sightseeing spots, including Samidare Stream, Ishigedo Rapids, Byobu Rock, Ashura Stream, Kujuku-shima (Ninety-nine Islands), Kumoi Falls, Shimai Falls, and Choshi Otaki. The final destination of Oirase Gorge is "Nenokuchi" on the eastern shore of Lake Towada. As part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Oirase Gorge has been designated as a National Special Scenic Spot and Natural Monument. Alongside Lake Towada, it is a classic sightseeing route in Aomori.

For those exploring on foot, it is recommended to walk upstream from the lower part of the gorge toward Lake Towada. Walking against the current allows you to fully appreciate the beautiful flow of water as seen in photographs.
1. Samidare no Nagare

This area was named "Samidare Stream" because three different water currents merge into one. The rocks within the river divide the flow, causing it to shift left and right, while numerous moss-covered boulders create a mystical landscape.
The surrounding area is also known as a prime spot for the purple azalea (Murasaki Yashio Tsutsuji). From spring to early summer, the bright purple flowers enhance the scenery, making it a popular sightseeing location.
2. Ishigedo Rest Area

Ishigedo Rest Area serves as an oasis for visitors exploring Oirase Gorge. It offers light meals such as ramen, udon, rice balls, and cold-brew coffee. Since there are no more restaurants beyond this point, it's recommended to take a break and eat here.
Nearby, there is a large boulder leaning against an ancient tree. This boulder is the origin of the name "Ishigedo," and it's fun to imagine where it might have come from and how it ended up in such a unique position.

3. Byobuiwa Rock

About 1 km upstream from Ishigedo Rest Area, the previously rapid current slows down. When you spot a rugged rock formation on the opposite bank, you have arrived at the sightseeing spot known as "Byobu Rock."
As the name suggests, the rock formation resembles a folding screen (Byobu). In the summer, it gets hidden behind thick foliage, so the best time to visit is between autumn and spring. Seeing Byobu Rock during the fall foliage season is especially recommended.
4. Ashura no Nagare

Ashura Stream is one of the most iconic sights in Oirase Gorge. About 1 km upstream from Byobu Rock, the terrain becomes steeper, causing the river's flow to intensify dramatically. Due to the river’s complex shape, the rushing water appears almost alive with movement and energy.
Although the trail in this area can be challenging, it’s well worth the effort. Near Ashura Stream, there are a few parking spots and benches, making it a popular location for tourists taking photos and artists sketching the scenery. Take your time to soak in the beauty of this famous spot.
5. Kujuku-shima

Further upstream from Ashura Stream lies "Kujuku-shima." This name comes from the numerous moss-covered rocks scattered throughout the river, resembling islands floating in the sea.
The intricate arrangement of the rocks is a stunning example of nature's artistry. With its serene beauty resembling a natural Japanese garden, Kujuku-shima is one of the must-see scenic spots along Oirase Gorge.
6. Kumoi Falls

Among the many waterfalls flowing into Oirase Gorge, Kumoi Falls stands out for its powerful presence. Cascading from the cliffside in three tiers, it crashes into the stream below with overwhelming force. The abundant water volume creates a dynamic scene, with mist that seems to reach the onlookers. The three-tiered structure of the waterfall was formed due to erosion and differences in the hardness of the rock layers. It’s a breathtaking natural spectacle that shouldn't be missed.
7. Shimai Falls

There is a waterfall where two streams flow closely together as if embracing one another. This waterfall is called "Shimai Falls." Among the two streams, the one with a larger water volume and a drop of about 10 meters represents the "older sister," as its strong and graceful flow resembles an adult woman. The other stream, with a 6-meter drop and a more delicate flow, symbolizes the "younger sister," evoking the image of a gentle woman.
8. Choshi Otaki Falls

Choshi Otaki is the largest waterfall in the main stream of the Oirase River, located just before reaching Lake Towada. This dynamic sightseeing spot boasts a 20-meter width and a height of about 7 meters. Because fish swimming upstream from the lower reaches can go no further, it is also known as "Uodome no Taki" (Fish-Stop Waterfall).
The best time to visit Choshi Otaki is early in the morning. Depending on weather conditions, if you're lucky, you may witness mist rising from the stream, illuminated by sunlight, creating mystical beams of light pouring into the gorge. The crisp morning air enhances the experience, so waking up early for this view is highly recommended.
9. Oirase Spring Water Museum and Oirase Stream Museum

Let’s introduce two visitor facilities located near the starting point of Oirase Gorge: Oirase Spring Water Museum and Oirase Stream Museum. The first floor of the Oirase Spring Water Museum is a bottling facility where pristine water collected from Oirase Gorge is processed for drinking. The second floor features an art gallery showcasing works by local artists.
The Oirase Stream Museum has an educational section on beech forests and nature, as well as a diorama display of Oirase Gorge. Visitors can deepen their understanding of the gorge’s ecosystem. The facility also includes a souvenir shop, a café, and a rental bike service. For City bicycles: 4 hours for 1,000 yen while for Electric-assist bicycles: 4 hours for 1,500 yen. The reasonable rental fees allow for a comfortable and enjoyable cycling experience through Oirase Gorge.

10. Keiryu no Eki Oirase

Keiryu no Eki Oirase is a must-visit spot for tourists exploring Oirase Gorge. This market-style stop offers seasonal local produce, fresh fruits, vegetables, and regional delicacies such as "Oirase Beer."
The on-site restaurant "Oirase Garden" is a great place for lunch before heading out on your Oirase Gorge walk. Dishes include grilled Himemasu (a local fish from Lake Towada), Hachinohe Senbei-jiru (a regional hotpot), and Towada Bara-yaki (grilled beef dish).
It is recommended to stop here for a break during your Oirase Gorge tour. The large parking lot makes it a convenient spot to prepare for hiking or sightseeing. If you forget any necessities, this location has you covered.
As a base camp for Oirase exploration, this is an ideal tourist stop.

11. Access and bicycle rental information

Since there is no train station near Oirase Gorge, the main way to access it is by car. However, there are also bus services from JR Hachinohe Station and Shichinohe-Towada Station.
Another option is to explore the area using rental electric bicycles called "Keiryu Ashi Store Cycle" or "Raku Chari."
