Furumachi in Niigata City is located just across Bandai Bridge and is the largest downtown entertainment district in Niigata Prefecture. Historically, it was one of Japan’s leading red-light districts. A stroll through its narrow alleys offers a glimpse into its charming, historic streetscape.
In Nabeya Street, you might be lucky enough to encounter a Furumachi Geigi (Geisha) on her way to an engagement.
Nearby, you’ll also find Hakusan Shrine, a historic and famous power spot in Niigata. The shrine is known as the guardian shrine of Niigata and is particularly popular for its love blessings. 5. Furumachi Geigi (古町芸妓)
The Furumachi Geigi are traditional Niigata geisha who entertain guests at ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurants) in Furumachi. Trained rigorously in Ichiyama-ryu, their performances include refined singing, dancing, and shamisen playing, showcasing their artistry and grace.
There are two types of geigi: "Tomesode" (senior geisha) and "Furisode" (apprentice geisha).
・Tomesode geigi have completed their apprenticeship, which takes 7 to 8 years.
・Furisode geigi are young apprentices aged 18 and older.
Tomesode geigi wear their hair in a Nakajimada style, with subtle water-based white makeup (without eyebrow enhancements). Their obi (sash) is tied in the Otaiko style, and for formal occasions, the lower part of the obi is left untied in a Yanagi (willow) knot. Their kimono features long sleeves and an extended hem, which trails elegantly. The colors and patterns of their kimono change with the seasons, offering a variety of beautiful looks throughout the year.
Furisode geigi, on the other hand, wear youthful hairstyles such as Momoware and wear furisode (long-sleeved kimono). Their obi is tied in a distinct Yanonoji style, different from the senior geigi.
This experience offers a rare chance to see authentic geisha performances in Niigata, making it a popular cultural attraction.
