[World Heritage] The Works of Antoni Gaudí – The Charm of Tourist Destination Barcelona
What is "The Works of Antoni Gaudí"?

The Spanish-born genius architect Antoni Gaudí was a leading artist of "Modernisme," a movement that flourished in Western Europe from the late 19th to early 20th century. The UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Works of Antoni Gaudí" refers to seven of his creations located in and around Barcelona.
Gaudí's designs closely resemble the French Art Nouveau style, characterized by beautifully undulating curves and ornate decorations. Beyond his architectural artistry, Gaudí's unique approach was highly regarded. In 1984, Park Güell, Palau Güell, and Casa Milà were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Park Güell, Palau Güell, and Casa Milà in Barcelona."

Later, in 2005, Casa Vicens, Casa Batlló, parts of the Sagrada Familia (the Nativity Façade and the Crypt), and the Church of Colònia Güell in the suburbs of Barcelona were added to the list. The official registration name was then changed to "The Works of Antoni Gaudí."
How to Access

Six of the seven sites in "The Works of Antoni Gaudí" are located in central Barcelona (Zone 1), making them easily accessible by train or bus.
A convenient option for transportation is the "T10" multi-ride ticket, which can be used on trains, subways, trams, and buses within Zone 1. Each time you pass through a ticket gate or reader, a usage count is printed, allowing you to use it up to 10 times without the need to purchase individual tickets.
Additionally, transfers within 1 hour and 15 minutes are not counted as extra trips, and the ticket can be shared among multiple people, making it even more convenient.
Recommended Highlights of "The Works of Antoni Gaudí" ①

The unfinished masterpiece "Sagrada Familia" is Gaudí’s most iconic work. If you visit Barcelona, this is a must-see attraction.
Gaudí, who was unknown at the time, was appointed as the chief architect at the age of 31 and dedicated his entire life to its construction until his death at 73. Despite still being under construction, parts of it—the Nativity Façade and the Crypt—were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

The Sagrada Familia is full of fascinating details, from its stained-glass windows and tree-like columns to its spiral staircases and rooftop views. Visitors can also explore the adjacent school and underground museum.
Don't miss the breathtaking nighttime illumination, which creates a truly enchanting atmosphere.

Described by Salvador Dalí as "a tart covered in sugar," Park Güell is one of Gaudí’s most colorful creations.
The visionary garden-city project was a collaboration between Gaudí and his patron, Eusebi Güell, but it was not well received by the people of Barcelona at the time, leading to its abandonment. Later, the city of Barcelona purchased the land and opened it as a public park.

The famous lizard fountain and wavy, colorful benches are must-see highlights. There is also a plaza on a small hill within the park, offering a stunning panoramic view of Barcelona.
Park Güell, where you can fully immerse yourself in Gaudí’s vibrant artistry, is another must-visit World Heritage Site in Barcelona.

Casa Milà was designed as a residence and apartment complex for businessman Pere Milà and his wife. Inspired by the Mediterranean, the building features wavy curves on its façade, resembling the movement of the sea. When it was first completed, locals mockingly called it "La Pedrera" (The Stone Quarry).
Today, Casa Milà remains a residential building, with four households still living there. However, it is also open to the public as a museum, where visitors can explore its unique architecture. The open courtyard and rooftop terrace are must-sees! From the rooftop, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Barcelona’s skyline and the Sagrada Familia.
Visiting Tips
Since Gaudí’s works are extremely popular, expect crowds year-round. During the high season, lines for same-day tickets can exceed 100 people, and entry restrictions are often enforced. Booking tickets in advance is highly recommended to avoid long waits.
Even with a ticket, you may not be able to enter immediately, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning for a smoother experience.
◎ Summary
The World Heritage Site "The Works of Antoni Gaudí" is not only a major attraction in Barcelona but also a symbol of Spain’s cultural heritage. Many people dream of seeing these masterpieces at least once in their lifetime.
Gaudí’s unique and imaginative architecture offers endless details to admire, so it’s best to take your time exploring. Be sure to fully immerse yourself in Gaudí’s world when visiting Barcelona!
