Historic City of Uzbekistan! 3 Recommended Tourist Attractions in Urgench

Urgench is the capital of the Khorezm Region in northern Uzbekistan, located in the delta area of the Amu Darya River. Once part of the neighboring Khufna–Urgench in Turkmenistan, the city was relocated during the Soviet era as the old city began to decline, and has since developed into the central urban hub of the region. Although there aren’t many tourist attractions within the city itself, Urgench serves as a major transportation hub, with flights, trains, and buses connecting it to other popular destinations such as Khiva and the broader Khorezm area. Here are three recommended attractions in Urgench.

1. Urgench Station

Urgench Station, recently renovated, serves as the main terminal of the Khorezm Region. In front of the station, a bustling local market gathers local residents, offering you an authentic taste of the local atmosphere. At night, several restaurants around the station serve genuine Uzbek cuisine, so be sure to try them out!

2. Kalta Minar

Kalata Minar is a minaret located in Khiva, about a 40-minute drive from Urgench. Construction began in 1852, and it has remained unfinished since reaching a height of 26 meters. The minaret is renowned for its beautiful blue tiles. The term “Kalta Minar” means “short tower,” and although its base is approximately 14 meters in diameter, it was expected to reach around 80 meters if completed, making it one of the largest minarets. Its intricate decorative details are especially impressive. Adjacent to Kalta Minar is the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa, which was once the largest Islamic school in Central Asia and is now renovated and operated as a hotel.
