Let’s Explore the Hidden Gem of Izumo! Tatebuekyo Gorge and Nearby Attractions
What is Tatebuekyo Gorge?

Tatebuekyo Gorge is a valley located upstream of the Kando River, which flows through Izumo City. It is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument and is also part of a Prefectural Park.
Towering rock pillars and unique rock formations, reaching heights of about 100 to 200 meters, stretch for about 1 kilometer—a truly breathtaking sight. These formations were created through erosion by the Kando River and natural weathering of the rocks. Each rock has been given a name, such as "Byobu Rock" (Folding Screen Rock), "Candle Rock," and "Eboshi Rock" (Headdress Rock). Because it resembles Yabakei Gorge in Oita, which is one of Japan’s New Three Scenic Spots, Tatebuekyo is often referred to as the "Yabakei of the San'in Region."
The gorge is also known for its hot springs. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing bath at nearby facilities, which are said to help with rheumatism and neuralgia, all while admiring the beautiful scenery of the gorge.
Additionally, several bridges cross the Kando River, such as Furokyo (Immortality Bridge), Furankyo (Floating Storm Bridge), and Suisanbashi (Drunken Stream Bridge). With viewing platforms and walking trails also available, Tatebuekyo is a popular sightseeing spot.

Reikouji Temple

About 1,200 years ago, a Buddhist monk visiting from Mount Koya witnessed a miraculous sight—a Buddha riding on a turtle emerging from the river. The monk enshrined the Buddha in a cave halfway up Tenchumine Peak, marking the beginning of Tatebuekyo's spiritual significance. Later, a temple was built to protect the cave, and in 1919 (Taisho 8), it was officially established as Reikouji Temple.
Along the temple path, you’ll find over 1,000 stone statues of the 500 Rakan (Arhats). The row of stone Buddhas carved into the rock face is truly an impressive sight. If you visit Reikouji, this is a must-see spot.
