JR Shimonada Station is famous for its stunning panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. With nothing obstructing the scenery, it has gained popularity as a highly photogenic station, attracting visitors from all over. Its picturesque setting has even been featured in movies and TV dramas, making it a must-visit location.
Although breathtaking views can be enjoyed at JR Shimonada Station throughout the day, it is particularly popular in the evening, as it is located along the Yuyake Koyake Line, renowned for its sunset views. Some visitors take photos, while others simply sit and gaze at the tranquil sea. The magic hour around sunset creates an enchanting atmosphere, so it is highly recommended to stay at the station until the sun fully sets.

A Lovers’ Sanctuary with Stunning Sunsets! "Futami Seaside Park"

Futami Seaside Park is a romantic destination where visitors can enjoy breathtaking sunsets. The surrounding area has even been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Sunset Spots by the NPO Japan Sunset and Sunrise Association, making it a prime location for sunset enthusiasts. Among these spots, Futami Seaside Park is particularly famous for its gorgeous sunset views.
To help visitors plan their visit, the park’s official website provides a sunset schedule. Checking the expected sunset time in advance ensures that you won’t miss the perfect moment. Additionally, various events are hosted at the park, so be sure to check the event calendar for upcoming activities.

The Red Truss Movable Bridge "Nagahama Ohashi"

Nagahama Ohashi, completed in August 1935, is Japan’s oldest surviving road drawbridge. It measures approximately 230 meters in length and 6 meters in width, with a movable section spanning 18 meters.
The Nagahama Ohashi will not be opened under the following conditions:
- If any weather warnings are issued for the northern Nanyo region of Ehime Prefecture
- If the wind speed at the center of the bridge exceeds 12 meters per second
Visitors should check weather conditions in advance before planning their visit.

A Stunning Natural Phenomenon If You’re Lucky! "Hijikawa Arashi"

The Hijikawa Arashi is a rare natural phenomenon that occurs on clear days from October to March, bringing strong winds accompanied by dense fog. This remarkable event happens when cold air from the basin upstream rushes along the Hijikawa River towards the sea in a dramatic surge. It’s so rare that witnessing it can be considered a stroke of luck. Sometimes, the fog extends several kilometers offshore, with wind speeds reaching over 10 meters per second.
A small elevated hill near the mouth of the Hijikawa River is home to the Hijikawa Arashi Observation Park, which provides the perfect vantage point to watch the mist roll over the sea. The sight of the fog streaming into the ocean is truly breathtaking, so on clear days, it’s worth waking up a little early to catch this mesmerizing scene.

A Coastline of Unique Rock Formations – "Kushiu Coast"

The Kushiu Coast is known for its striking rock formations, with massive stones scattered along the shoreline. Among them, the Nawakake-iwa (Rope-Tied Rock) stands out as particularly significant.

What is Nawakake-iwa?

In September 740, Fujiwara no Hirotsugu, a government official from Dazaifu, Kyushu, led a rebellion against the imperial court. During this time, Ochi Tamazumi, the governor of Iyo Province, marched with his troops towards Chikuzen (now Fukuoka Prefecture). On their journey, they stopped by Kushiu Coast, where they secured their ship’s mooring rope to a large rock—this rock later became known as Nawakake-iwa.
Upon their return from Chikuzen, a Shinto shrine was established at this very location. This is why a torii gate stands beside Nawakake-iwa today.

What is Mishima Shrine?

Located on a hilltop in Nagahama-cho, Ozu City, Mishima Shrine enshrines Ohoyamatsumi-no-Kami (a mountain deity), Ikazuchi-no-Kami (a thunder deity), and Takaokami-no-Kami (a water deity). Annual festivals are held on March 22, July 8, and the third Sunday of October.

Overlooking the Ocean and Flower Fields! "Nihon Suisen Hanakai Road"

Nihon Suisen Hanakai Road is a famous daffodil viewing spot. From December to late January, the hills along the coastal road are covered with blooming daffodils, creating a spectacular sight. When the sea breeze sweeps through the area, the sweet fragrance of the daffodils fills the air, enhancing the experience.
From the hilltops, stunning sunset views can be enjoyed. On clear days, visitors can witness the breathtaking fusion of the sunset and daffodils, making it a truly picturesque setting. Even during the daytime, the contrast between the delicate yellow daffodils and the deep blue sky creates a beautiful scene that can be appreciated at any time of day.
The Nihon Suisen Hanakai Road has a free parking lot, making it a convenient stop while driving along the Yuyake Koyake Line. If you’re exploring the area by car, be sure to drop by this scenic spot.
