Chiba City Museum of Science – A Popular Chiba Tourist Spot for All Ages

One of Japan’s Largest Domed Planetariums

A major attraction at Chiba City Museum of Science is its popular planetarium, which seats 200 people for a relaxing view of the night sky. It uses a hybrid system that combines two advanced technologies: the optical star projector "CHIRON" and the digital planetarium system "Virtarium II." This setup allows for a stunning display of 10 million stars—an awe-inspiring sight rarely seen in Chiba. Learning about space helps visitors appreciate their place in the vast universe.

Exhibits That Stimulate All Five Senses

On the 8th floor, Wonder Town features interactive exhibits that engage all five senses, allowing visitors to see everyday things from new perspectives. A must-see is the "Tilted Room," which lets visitors experience visual illusions and learn about perception tricks.

For auditory exploration, exhibits demonstrate how we hear sounds through our ears and bones, and there are quizzes based on everyday sounds. You can also see how sound can be visualized.

In the light section, beyond middle school-level lessons on reflection and refraction, you can experience unique setups like the "Non-Reversing Mirror." There’s also a space for learning math concepts in a fun way, such as solving probability puzzles—great for easing kids into math and science.

Learn About Cutting-Edge Technology

On the 9th floor in "Techno Town," you can explore the science behind the technology that supports modern life. For example, it covers topics like how TV images are transmitted.

The "Machines and Technology" zone features the popular "Skeleton Car", which gives a rare look inside a car’s workings—perfect for kids interested in cars or robots.

You’ll gain insights into the technologies that support our daily lives. The "Digital and Technology" section includes topics like digital music to make it more accessible.

Explore the Wonders of Life and Earth

Head to the 10th floor to visit "Geo Town," which delves into the mysteries of life and Earth.

In the "Earth Environment" area, you’ll find exhibits like the "Weather Studio" and "Fossil Excavation Field" to help understand Earth's changes. The "Nature Environment" section focuses on living organisms and how they’ve evolved through unique adaptations. In the "Space Exploration" area, there are hands-on displays that help uncover the grand, still-mysterious stories of the cosmos.

There's also a "Know Yourself" section with engaging activities like dynamic vision tests to stimulate curiosity. Also located on the 10th floor is the "Sky Garden," a relaxing space with seating for 100 people where you can enjoy meals or take a break.

Hands-On Crafting Events Are a Big Hit

While science museums are often about observing and listening, the Chiba City Museum of Science offers workshops and classes that allow children to actively participate in hands-on crafting. In the "Exploration Lab," kids can take their time to fully immerse themselves in creation at their own pace, nurturing a deeper interest in science.

Many of these workshops distribute participation tickets 15 minutes before they begin, usually scheduled from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. It’s best to plan if you want to join. Past events have included volunteer-led craft experiences like making "teleidoscopes" or "Pull-Octopus" toys.

Check Out Free Admission Days and Discounted Tickets

While entry to the museum usually requires a fee, Chiba City offers ways to visit at a discount. Local elementary and middle school students can get free admission every Saturday by showing the "Fureai Passport" distributed by the Chiba City Board of Education.

There’s also a "Science Museum Member Program" with an annual fee, which grants unlimited free access for a year, 5% discounts at the museum shop, and access to members-only events.

Access

The museum is located inside the multi-purpose facility "Qiball." The museum spans the 7th to 10th floors. While parking is available, it's paid, so public transportation is recommended. Nearby train stations:
