Morelia is located about five hours by bus from Mexico City. It has flourished as the capital of Michoacán, a state blessed with vast natural landscapes. It is located in the small rural town of Angangueo, at an altitude of 2,980 meters, about 170 km east of Morelia. Around November each year, tens of millions, even up to a hundred million, monarch butterflies migrate here from Canada and the United States to spend the winter. Until March, when they return to North America, visitors can witness the breathtaking spectacle created by the butterflies—a sight unique to this location. This precious site is also registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site as part of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
