Ciudad del Carmen, a city in southern Mexico facing the Gulf of Mexico, has been used since pre-Hispanic times as a key location linking the Aztec and Maya civilizations. Today, it has developed into a scenic coastal city and is home to several attractive tourist spots.
Surrounded by tropical vegetation, the island is dotted with many beautiful beaches, and the natural scenery that accompanies them is truly stunning. The inner side of the island faces a large lagoon that is home to a wide variety of wildlife, making it one of the largest wildlife conservation areas in Mexico.

1. El Zacatal Bridge (Puente el Zacatal)

This is the bridge you cross when entering Ciudad del Carmen from the west along the Gulf Coast. Stretching approximately 4 km in length, the bridge is built quite low, making it especially enjoyable for tourists traveling along the Gulf Coast by rental car.
It feels as if you’re driving right over the sea! Built in 1994, this bridge is the longest two-lane bridge in Mexico.
The best time to cross this bridge is from late afternoon to sunset. The sunset views are incredibly beautiful, making it well worth the visit. It’s wonderful on clear days, of course, but also highly recommended when there are clouds in the sky—the balance between the sunset-colored clouds and the blue sea seen from the low bridge is simply stunning.
At night, the bridge is decorated with colorful illuminations, offering yet another impressive sight. A promenade extends from the city, so you can also walk out to enjoy the view. This is truly a must-see sightseeing spot when visiting Ciudad del Carmen!

2. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

Ciudad del Carmen is an island approximately 40 km long, with its centro (downtown area) located on the western side of the island, near the El Zacatal Bridge.
Very close to the base of the bridge is Ignacio Zaragoza Park, and directly across from it stands this church. Many of the city’s main tourist attractions are concentrated in this area.
In the 18th century, a small chapel once stood on this site and served as the center of worship for the town’s Catholic community. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1850, so the current church was hastily completed in 1856.
Compared to the cathedrals found in large cities, the exterior is small and quite simple. However, once inside, visitors will find beautiful stained glass, finely carved wooden sculptures, and lovely paintings, all of which make it a highlight for tourists.

3. Playa Norte

This beach is located on the northern coast of the western side of the long, narrow Ciudad del Carmen Island. Because it is close to the city center, it is frequently visited by local residents as well.
The approximately 3 km stretch of beautiful white-sand beach allows cars to be driven right up to the shore. It is also popular with tourists as a great spot to watch stunning sunsets.
During the peak summer season, many tourists visit, and rentals such as jet skis, banana boats, and windsurfing equipment are available, making it a beach where you can enjoy active fun. Of course, the coastline is also lined with restaurants serving delicious seafood.
Another appealing point is that the beach is within walking distance from hotels in the central area of Ciudad del Carmen.
