A floating island of art in the Seto Inland Sea! 4 recommended sightseeing spots on Naoshima

1. Outdoor Art

One of the reasons Naoshima came to be called the “island of contemporary art” is the abundance of artworks displayed outdoors. Among them, the works of the famous artist Yayoi Kusama—particularly her pumpkins—are iconic. While pumpkins are installed in various spots around the island, the red pumpkin is especially famous.

Other pieces include the Naoshima Pavilion by Sou Fujimoto and works by international artists, offering a wide variety of art. Simply taking a stroll allows you to encounter numerous works of art.

2. Chichu Art Museum

Located in the southwestern part of Naoshima, the Chichu Art Museum is, as its name suggests, built underground. It exhibits the works of three artists: Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria.

Although the artworks are displayed underground, natural light streams in, creating the impression that it isn’t underground at all. The reason it was built below ground was to preserve the beautiful landscape of the Seto Inland Sea by avoiding above-ground structures. Inside, the museum features a warm café with extensive use of wood and a shop offering a variety of original products.

Additionally, visitors can join night programs and private tours. If you’re interested, it’s definitely worth participating.

3. Benesse House Museum

Also designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the Benesse House Museum is more than just an art museum—it also functions as an accommodation facility.

Even for those not staying overnight, the museum has restaurants, cafés, shops, and even a spa, making it a fully equipped, high-quality accommodation. While ideal for art enthusiasts, its stylish interior also makes it appealing to those who simply enjoy a sophisticated atmosphere. Artworks are scattered not only inside the building but also in the surrounding forests and along the coastline, making exploring the area a fun activity during free time.

4. Naoshima Slag Pottery Experience Workshop

Located near Miyanoura Port in western Naoshima, the Kagawa Prefecture Naoshima Environmental Center was originally built to process waste from Teshima and general waste from Naoshima. In an effort to recycle slag produced during the incineration and melting of waste, a pottery workshop was established using clay mixed with glassy slag.

Visitors can create items such as dishes and accessories with this slag-infused clay, and there are no safety concerns. In addition to standard items like dishes and accessories, you can even make pumpkin-shaped ornaments unique to Naoshima. For those who want to leave with a tangible souvenir from the island, the Naoshima Slag Pottery Experience Workshop is highly recommended.

◎ Summary

Naoshima offers many stylish and sophisticated sightseeing spots that are unique to an island of contemporary art. Visit Naoshima to experience the island’s relaxed pace of life while immersing yourself in a variety of artistic expressions.
